Since my credentials are not super great, I plan to early action. Do i have a reasonable chance or should i reconsider applying
I go to a very competitive HS in Central NJ
I want to Major in Finance.
Cumulative HS GPA Freshman and Sophmore Year 88.16, Junior Year GPA hasn't been factored in yet. My weighted Junior year gpa is probably around 91.
During my Junior year i have significantly increased my course load. ex. English Honors, Bio Honors, PreCalc Honors, AP Government & Politics

AP Classes
AP Chemistry- 4 on AP exam, 71 Average in class
AP US Government and Politics, 86 final average. AP score unknown at the moment.

SAT Scores
2060 highest single score 740 math 680 CR 640 writing
2090 superscore 740 math 680 CR 670 Writing

Sports
I have a varsity letter for track
4 years Cross Country
3 Years Indoor Track
4 years Outdoor Track

I also have over 90 hours of community service at a local hospital working in the patient transport dept.

Remember, W&M doesn’t have early action, only early decision which is binding so you have to be ready to commit to going to W&M if you apply ED.

Your standardized test scores are quite good so that’s great. You didn’t provide a lot of information on your senior year courses but we generally recommend 3-5 APs to include calc, the fourth level of a foreign language and physics.

Does an 88 GPA mean your grades are mostly Bs. If so is there a reason? Generally, the most competitive students for admission are near the top 10% of their class and have more As than Bs so if there’s a reason your grades are lower (illness, learning disability, extenuating circumstance), do provide us that information so we can take it into account.

Also, we’d encourage you to pursue a leadership role or two during your senior year such as captaining one of your sports teams in order to help that part of your application stand out.

Every student has a chance of getting into W&M because we don’t have any cut-offs, minimums or formulaic process but we do caution all students to remember that W&M is highly selective admitting only 27% of the OOS students who apply. For more on any applicant’s chances and our process, check out our Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs Chance Me](http://blogs.wm.edu/2010/12/14/chance-me/))

i am about to begin my senior year in high school and william and mary is my first choice for college and i was wondering what my chances are of actually getting in. i intend to apply for early decision to william and mary. i am a muslim female currently living in state. i have a gpa of 3.8 and a weighted of 4.1 i take either honors or ap classes by the time i graduate i will have taken 6 ap courses i am involved in about five clubs and am currently a student ambassador. i am a member of the national honor society and math honor society. i have a few teachers that i have known for a few years that will write me excellent teacher recommendations.in my senior year i will be taking ap biology ap chemistry ap government and ap calc. physics and honors eng. i have completed four years on spanish already. i have always taken on a challenging course load. i took the sat but my score was average 700 math 480 verbal 560 writing . i’m going to be retaking the sat this october to try and improve that 480. do i have a chance of getting in?

2012senior, all applicants have a chance of getting in. Our process is holistic and as such there are no minimal criteria that students must meet in order to be considered. We review everything from grades to test scores to essays to the background of each individual applicant.

Sounds like your course selection and grades are fairly strong (do you go to school in Fairfax County…if so a 4.1 weighted GPA is certainly good). You didn’t share much about your ECs but if some of them are four-year commitments that’s a good start. Also, consider pursuing some leadership positions this year in some of your organizations.

We also do our best to build a diverse class in every sense of the word so feel free to share about your Muslim heritage.

Your Critical Reading score is quite low. Is English your second language? If so we might recommend taking the TOEFL as a good supplement to your SAT score. In either case, retaking the exam cannot hurt. W&M superscores the SAT (we combine your best critical reading with your best math) so focus on the preparing for the Critical Reading section as your math score is very strong already. The middle 50% of our students score between a 1250 and 1450 so right now your score is about 70 points below that. That in no way means you’re automatically denied as 25% of those we admit score lower than a 1250 but taking it again will help you try to be the most competitive applicant possible.

You could also consider interviewing this fall if you didn’t do so over the summer.

Finally, if W&M is your first choice, apply ED. It cannot hurt you to do so and does provide an advantage as the pool is much smaller so it’s easier for any student to stand out.

I am taking five APs, Pre Calc, and an advanced class senior year. You said that calc would be wanted as well. I am in state, but if I do not have calc will it affect my chances?

Just wondering – does it make any difference if one interviews in the summer or the fall? Do you always have fall interviews (ie next year, too?) or was this year a one-time event?
Thanks (and good luck with the hurricane prep!)

However, according to the CDS, they will consider if submitted - but I think it’s safe to safe you need not submit these scores, but if you do take a Subject test and do very well on it, well, it can’t hurt to submit the score.

However, a few schools do require SAT-2 tests, so check the other schools you plan to apply to to see what their requirements are, and determine which tests (if any) you might need to take - there are only so many test dates available. Schools like M.I.T., Swarthmore, Princeton, Williams, and Yale require, I think, SAT-2 Subject tests.

In-state UVA, for example, doesn’t require SAT-II tests, but they “strongly encourage” you take any two - I’d interpret that to pretty much mean “required” to gain admission. Washington and Lee have a similar “encouragement.” I don’t think JMU or VT require, consider, or encourage SAT-II tests, but best check with each school to be sure.

salone4u, we do recommend students take calc. It’s not required for admission but it is one of the classes we consider a benchmark of a more challenging curriculum. Having calc will make your transcript more challenging but not having calc will not automatically make you a waitlist or deny instead of an admit. Will not having calc makes you less competitive than those who take calc? Yes but only in terms of the evaluation of your math progression. Your transcript with 5 APs may be stronger than that of a student with 3 APs which include calc.

What we’re trying to say is that we review every appilcation in full twice and holistically. No one factor automatically makes a student an admit or deny. It is an evaluation of every facet you put forward (academic and personal) that helps us arrive at a decision.

justwonderful – the interviews we are offering this fall are identical to those we offered in the summer (i.e. those who interviewed in summer should not interview again in the fall). This is the first year we’re offering fall interviews so we have to see how it goes. We hope to continue it in the future but have to evaluate the program as it goes along.

2012senior – what Squiddy said is correct. SAT IIs are considered if submitted but not required. Our primary focus with standardized testing is the SAT I and/or ACT

Hello, I am a Junior right now and am taking 3 AP courses (English, History, Psychology) and Honors French 4, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Pre-Calculus. I participate in many after school activities that include Student Government, Amnesty International, and TCAST (Twnety-First Century Technology). I train in and instruct Taekwon-Do and have been training for 6 years now. My Sophomore GPA was 4.01 and my Freshman was 3.9. Senior year I plan on taking at least 4 AP classes including English, History, Economics, and Government/Politics. My question is would it help my chances of getting into W&M (my first-choice school) significantly if I take Honors Physics and Calc as well or should I option for AP in one or both? I hope to major in Finance and begin the fall of 2013. Also, because I am out of state is there anything extra I should do to improve my chances of getting in? Thank you!

Your course selection overall is looking strong but we would definitely recommend you take calculus and physics. As for what level to take them at, we’d recommend you take at least one of them at the AP level if you believe you can do well in the class. If you don’t, all of your APs will be in the humanities and because W&M is a liberal arts school we like to see students balance their academics and take challenging courses in both the humanities and the math/sciences.

If you feel four APs is your limt, we’d recommend AP Calc in place of either AP Econ or AP Government as you have a large number of social science APs at the moment.

As for other recommendations, we’d recommend you pursue leadership positions in your organizations. That’s a greay way to distinguish yourself in that arena. We’d also recommend you thinking about pursuing an on-campus interview next summer ([William & Mary - On-Campus Interviews](http://www.wm.edu/admission/interview)).

If W&M remains your first choice, consider applying ED. It’s binding so you have to be willing to come to W&M no matter what but because the pool is much smaller it’s easier for any student to stand out.

I am from California (Campolindo high school) in one of the most competitive public districts in CA
going into my senoir year i have a 4.1 weighted (not including freshman year) and a 4.0 unweighted
I have gotten all A’s sophmore and junior year and 1 B freshman year. I got a superscore 2080 on SAT. I took AP environmental science last year and got a 5 on the ap. Senoir year I will be taking AP english, AP Statistics, and honors spanish as well as continuing for my second year in chamber choir. we rank 3rd in northern CA. I build houses in mexico and did a spanish emersion program in costa rica for 3 weeks last summer. My extracurriculars have tons of musical theatre, vocal performance, dance, and community service.

My weighted GPA is a 3.8, my SAT score is 2060, and my ACT score is a 26. I’m applying early decision to W&M and I’ve taken AP Biology, AP US History, AP Calculus AB, and AP Psychology, as well as Honors English, World History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Precalculus, and Computer Science. I’ve participated in around 10 clubs during high school and I have a couple leadership roles as well. I’ve earned awards in the National Spanish Exam and through clubs. I’m a member of the National Honor Society. I’ve had two jobs before and I do a lot of community service work. I’ve played a sport on junior varsity for two years and on varsity for one year. I’m an Asian female. How likely am I to get into W&M?

Hi, can someone tell me if I have a chance of getting into William and Mary? I am a white male and I live in virginia. My unweighted gpa is 3.7 and my weighted gpa is 4.1. My sats are 2000: 690 reading, 670 math, 640 writing. I got a 720 on the us history subject test and a 720 on the english literature subject test. I’m the president of the nhs and the president of the german club (I was the secretary last year too). I’m in the science nhs, the german nhs, my school’s honor council, and the forensics team. I took almost all of the hardest classes possible. I’ve taken 3 aps so far and I’m in another 3 currently. I got 3s on english language and world history and I got a 4 on us history, which makes me an ap scholar. I’m in ap biology, ap english lit, ap government, honors physics, german 4, band 4, religion 4, and statistics 1. Band and religion are the only non-honors/ap classes I am taking right now. I’ve received many national german exam awards. I got 1 C my sophomore year, but I onlt got 1 B last year (junior year). My school doesn’t rank, but I’m in the top 10 of my class (approximated). My letters of recommendation are good and I think my essays are excellent. I didn’t apply ED, but I wish I did. Do I have a decent chance as a regular decision applicant? I really want to go to W&M!
Thanks!

^I am also an actor and having been active in my school’s theatre dept. since my sophomore year. I won the school’s award for most improved actor for my performance in the spring play (spring 2012). Thanks again!

I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine. I would like to know just from this, what chances of being accepted into W&M I have. I greatly appreciate the help and advice! Thanks!

W&M admissions doesn’t chance and no one else really knows. so neither do I- but I can say that for anyone to actually have a clue, they would need to know if you are instate or out of state (Badger boys state implies out of state) and what your unweighted GPA is. I would hazard a guess that given I think you are out of state, and since you say Top 20% that means you are not Top 10% and your ACT isn’t strong, this is a reach for you.

Hit enter too quickly- meant to say, if this is your dream school, knock the socks of the essay, go ED and you don’t know. They are a holistic admissions school and there is nothing I see in what you put that says you would go into the “no” pile automatically. Also just noticed you are from Wisconsin- and out of state boys is the second toughest admit group (right after oos girls). So make sure your essay is as good as you can make it!
