@AvonHSDad: what was the GAAP program like? I think an admitted students weekend sounds awesome and I’m definitely going, but just curious, what kind of things happen over the weekend?

Wizkid, a couple of thoughts about your reticence to get involved in the Facebook page:

First, you say, “I just don’t want people who see that I’ve joined to think I’ve committed to go.” However, as Publicforum points out, have of those who join eventually go elsewhere, so no one is going to think you’re being fraudulent if you start chatting.

Then you say, “I don’t see much benefit at this point in the game in hooking up with random people who, like me, have made no formal committment to the university.” I think a big part of the experience is to chat with a bunch of incoming freshman - at least half of whom would be your new classmates at G’town - to see if they’re the sort of folks you want to hang with for the next four years. And, since we all know that kids involved enough in their education to participate in CC and the like (including the F’book page) are those most likely to be campus movers & shakers ((<== wee joke)), it’s a good way to get started on your ‘networking’. Going off to college can be a excrutiatingly scary and lonely experience - wouldn’t you rather walk onto campus with a group of acquaintances already in place? So, maybe there’s a little bit of a benefit?

I couldn’t agree more with AvonHSDad! My son is a freshman in the SFS and it was the GAAP weekend that also sealed the deal with him too! Like AvonHSDad’s son, mine was also very much on the fence about two other universities (although he wasn’t ready to commit to another university). Once he stepped foot on the Georgetown campus and starting meeting incoming freshman he was sold. The financial aid package sealed the deal 100%. He’s had so many amazing opportunities (academic, social etc.) in just his first semester, he is even shocked. When they tell you that you can be busy from morning till night at Georgetown, they are not exaggerating one bit.

UrsaMajoric: I was referring more to people on my personal Facebook, not Georgetown people, when I said I didn’t want them to see that I had joined a group of the Georgetown class of 2016. I just think meeting people in person is a lot more telling. Don’t get me wrong. I think the group is a great idea, I’m just not ready to join it yet.

And honestly, going out and making friends is not a concern of mine. I think that comes easily.

Does anyone know when we’ll find out about financial aid as EA applicants? I haven’t submitted my forms yet but once I submit them, how long would it take? I’m completely in love with Georgetown but I don’t want to get too set on it before knowing that I can afford to come.

The other school that he thought he was going to attend based on their accepted student visit the weekend before Georgetown was Northwestern University. He also turned down Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins and two state school honors programs along with NW.

The program included more detailed tours of the campus, sessions with the various college deans regarding the academic programs, an introduction to some of the campus groups and activities, an opportunity to sit in a special session class with one of the leading faculty members, several sessions in Gaston Hall with the President, Dean and other campus leaders and a lot of time to meet current and other accepted students. There were some separate functions for the parents as well. Its a busy weekend but very worthwhile. When we were driving home he told me how open and welcoming the students made everyone feel and particularly how much school spirit there was everywhere on campus. All of that plus the opportunities in DC sealed the deal for him. Plus you might get to meet Jack the Bulldog. :D

If I recall, the FA letters were issued in February if your FAFSA and CCS forms are all filed on time. You have until May 1st to accept your offer of admission so there is plenty of time to review and compare FA packages. I should ask - is the Georgetown EA binding or not? I don’t know as our S applied RD.

Georgetown EA is not binding.

I got accepted to SFS hurray!

any other accepted students receive a christmas card? mine was hand written from my admissions counsellor (who I have had no previous contact with) with a joke about my personal essay.

I want a Christmas card!! I am jealous. lol

I got deferred from Georgetown but accepted to MIT. I have no idea what happened.

^ Holy **** Congratulations! Top 20 schools are completely unpredictable like that, though. MIT may have seen something in you that Georgetown didn’t. Don’t dwell on it. I know two people who were deferred and rejected from Georgetown but accepted to Princeton regular decision.

@constantki: I was the other way around. accepted to gtown but deferred from MIT. Congrats to you!

So I was accepted to GaTech early and my dad said I should forget about Georgetown (McDonough). I already applied and set up my interview!! How do I (respectfully) knock some sense into him? I would much rather go to McDonough than do IE at Tech lol

Constantki… wow. All I can say is “wow”. Oh, and congratulations. Good thing you thought ahead and had that safety school on standby. <8-)

I got a Christmas card today from Georgetown with a nice note about one of my essays. Georgetown makes you love it more and more each day.

@whizkid, a little late, im white (Iranian-German heritage)

@missedthkickoff…
what definetly help were my essays and the activities on which i based them. i have 3.93 unweighted gpa, extracurriculars were founder and editor in chief of the school newspaper, a couple of leading positions in the student council and captain of the basketball team. what i think help for my app to MSB in particular was that im engaged in 2 businesses. i am an independent contractor for storm oil, llc, which is company to collect, filters and sells waste vegetable oil to make biofuels and i have an online business on which i sell hip-hop instrumentals

I’m getting free tuition to MIT, so I’m basically comMITted lol.
@angelsfan2334 Woah! I’m surprised that someone else applied to GTown and MIT early! I’m sorry to hear that you were deferred, but you do have that beautiful acceptance from Gtown to lean on.

^Congrats, bro. We wish you would consider Georgetown for regular decision, but we understand lol
