I go to an IB school with slightly strict regulations on APs. I would take AP Calc, since I took AP Stat this year and math is a strong suit of mine, but I have to wait until junior year to take it (and even then, that’s considered highly advanced and pursued by only 20 people at most per year).

Guys, I need help, fast! My counselor told me I can’t take AP Chem next year because it’s already full and juniors and seniors have priority in choosing classes. So basically I’m screwed, because I really want to take three science APs in high school.

My options now are:

A. Take advanced chem (what a sophomore usually takes), but I’ve already studied a good chunk of the chem material so I think I would be very bored during the first semester.

B. Take either AP physics (not sure which one), AP bio, or AP envi sci and take chem over the summer (what I originally planned to do). The thing is, I’m not exactly comfortable taking a class with all upper-classmen, and they would probably think of me as being cocky, pretentious, and hubristic.

Is AP chem with all upperclassmen too? If so, what’s the difference?

I know that you said you weren’t comfortable with taking a class with upperclassmen but in your position I would definitely do the second option. Who cares what they think of you? If you are qualified enough to take the class as a sophomore then you should seize the opportunity (doing so will/should not make you come off as pretentious). But if you really feel uncomfortable go with the first option. There is no point in doing stuff you’re uncomfortable with.

@Swinter AP chem is usually unpopular so they often have sophomores fill up any open spots.

@pidude Yeah, I agree. I’m just having a really hard time choosing between the two options.
