ECs long-term part-time job, outrigger paddling, volunteering for environmental groups
Merit, don’t know. Per the acceptance packet they will award on a rolling basis starting in late December/early January
Hook, per the stats, a woman studying mechanical engineering might be considered a hook

Good luck & aloha!

Posting for my daughter

Admitted
Applied around the beginning of October I believe
Out of state (Texas)
35 ACT (36 English, 35 math, 34 reading, 34 science)
4.9 GPA (weighted), 3.6 (unweighted-I think)
Merit aid not released yet as far as I know
ECs: Paid internship last summer with engineering and cost control team on Gulf Coast’s leading liquid natural gas terminal. Self-taught HTML, CSS, Java, and Python in addition to participation in Women’s Coding Collective.
A few other unique extracurricular activities plus the usual (NHS, choir)
Hook: Not sure…maybe female who is pretty passionate about STEM fields

S16 applied either just before or on Nov. 1st and they received all parts (test scores, etc) by Nov. 6th (as confirmed by admissions office) and he has not received a decision to date. The website states that if you apply by Nov. 15th, they will issue a decision within 30 days. If that is the case, S should have received notification by now.

Is anyone else still waiting on the “30 day” decision? My understanding is that they notify by mail (not online), but even factoring that in my S should have heard by now.

I believe they notified my daughter by email first, followed by a snail mail packet a few weeks later.

I do recall them sending an email a week or two before her acceptance stating that the admissions dept was moving to a new office and that might cause delays. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t heard yet.

Good luck to your son!

@4kids2graduate I am in the same boat. Applied on 10/27 and still have not heard. In reading some of the threads from last year they did this as well and some folks who apllied in November last year didn’t hear until February. I emailed them on 12/3 and they told me “I should hear a decision shortly”

I guess we’ll see…

@4kids2graduate and @16tobias , Me too! I submitted all of my materials by October 23, and I still have not received any answer! There were some problems with my SAT score reports being sent to schools so I called admissions at the end of October to make sure that they had received all my info, and they said I should hear back from them with a decision at the end of November… I called the admissions office again two days ago and they said that I should receive a decision by the end of the year now, but honestly, I highly doubt I’ll hear anything until January, given the dates on the threads from last year. However, I do have somewhat good news for those who are also waiting; I know a student at my school who also applied at around the end of October, and this student received a rejection letter (by mail, not email) at about mid-November. So I guess this means that we haven’t been outright rejected… yet?.. I really wish that if they are in fact sort of repeatedly “deferring” us to the next round of rolling admissions decisions, they would notify us in some sort of way. I mean, even a generic form letter would be better than being kept wondering and waiting in the dark about what’s taking so long.

^^ “I really wish that if they are in fact sort of repeatedly “deferring” us to the next round of rolling admissions decisions, they would notify us in some sort of way.” ^^

Or at least change their stated policy of saying they notify within 30 days.

DD just got her acceptance in Chemical Eng. email! Applied Nov.2nd, talked to admissions on Dec. 10th…they said that the “30 days was actually 30 business day”! Ok…still longer than 30 business days…but at least she knows finally!! Now to sit and wait for the others!

30 business days, really? If that is truly the case, they need to re-word their website. That is ridiculous. There are probably other applicants like my S who expected to hear by early December (at the latest), which would drive some decisions about which other applications to do. Now S has to work on other apps regardless due to looming deadlines and no word from Mines.

@Chinamom2 Did your D’s acceptance also mention any scholarship? Scholarships are supposed to be considered automatically based on grades/test scores. I just didn’t know if that information comes out now or later.

@4kids2graduate, D was accepted and in the mailed packet had a brochure called “Road Map to Mines” with the following information about merit scholarships:

“Scholarship consideration begins in late December, and students are notified on a rolling basis via first class mail from January through March 1st.”

D did the quickie, free application, and did not include a personal statement. I wonder if that improved the turn-around time?

Not in the email, but hopefully in the snail mail packet? It said she should expect the packet in 2 weeks or so.

@4kids2graduate, I said the same thing to admissions! It certainly can put other things on hold!! They said they were hoping to get the decisions out by end of the year! When I looked at last years posts it seems the same thing happened.

Deferred?
Applied 11-13-15
In State
GPA: 3.57
EC’s: Theatre, Band (5 separate bands), Volunteer, Green Club, Coding Club
Hook: Hispanic with a passion for Computer Science / Great rec from Computer Science teacher

I got an email that said:

Dear Justin,

We have completed a first evaluation of your admissions application to Colorado School of Mines. Our current decision is to hold your application for additional information.

Please provide an updated high school transcript with your Grades, Rank, and GPA after completion and posting of this fall’s semester/quarter results as soon as it is available.

We received an earlier transcript for your file on 11/13/2015, but we need additional information about your senior year progress before making a final decision.

We understand that the requested additional high school transcript information may not be available until the end of your fall semester or quarter. We look forward to receiving this information and giving your application the careful second evaluation it deserves.

Thank you for applying to Colorado School of Mines. Please feel free to contact our office if you have questions. We can be reached at 303-273-3220, toll free at 888-446-9489, or via email at admit@mines.edu.

Sincerely,
Heather Boyd

Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management

I’m just confused because my high school is on a trimester system. They got my fall scores with my first application. I don’t understand if they want me to reapply after second tri? Second tri doesn’t end until march. My college counselor said that they filled up before new years last year. Is this a deferral? Are my chances severely damaged?

Admitted
Date applied: September 12 (it was my first choice so I got it in ASAP)
In state
ACT: 30
GPA unweighted: 3.80
weighted: 4.14
Merit aid received - Yes- 10K
ECs: Speech and Debate leadership and awards, 500+ hours volunteer work, Classics Club leadership and awards, Mu Alpha Theta, NHS,
Hook: Girl with a VERY rigorous class schedule over all four years— 13 AP (including Physics 1,2,C, Chemistry, Biology, and Calc AB), and honors classes

From what I gathered on my two tours there and many information sessions, the Mines Admissions team looks mostly at class schedule, grades and test scores, so even though my GPA and tests scores were exactly average with their acceptance stats, my “rigorous course of study” pushed my application towards the accepted pool.

Replying for my son…

Admitted
Applied Mid September 2015 (when it opened)
In state
Act 32 composite (34 Math, 32 Science, 31 Reading, 29 English)
GPA 4.0 (weighted around 4.4)
Merit received (Half of in-state max)
Hook - not much, white, NHS, in-state, male, however is a potential student athlete with great references
Why you think you got accepted/wait listed/rejected - Great grades (never a B, nice GPA and potential student athlete)

Deciding between Mines and University of Denver (received Chancellor merit scholarship)…

ThatOneEngineer , can you confirm that you received $10K merit while being in-state ? They told us $5K was the max for in-state :frowning:

Sorry for the confusion! I meant that the whole merit award was a total of 10K. Technically that would be $2,500 a yer.

Denied for petroleum engineering
Gold Application, sent SAT scores end of NOV
OOS California
SAT:1990 CR:660, M:770 W:560
GPA weighted and unweighted: 3.4, 4.1
ECs: tutoring at community college, mock trial
Hook: I took Calc 2, course load was heavy, IB DP candidate
Why you think you got accepted/wait listed/rejected: OOS with weak scores/GPA, multiple athletes from my school were offered admission to CSM, but did not respond on their intent to go there, so they probably did not want 5-6 OOS students accepted from the same high school.

I submitted my complete application by the end of October and haven’t received a decision yet. @CSjustin I got the same email as you. Any one knows is it a deferral?
