@hufflepuffle any news? Nothing here.
@BUalum93 I called ResLife and they said housing assignments will most likely be out on Friday…so much for early this week.
@BUalum93 Assignments are out!
D just received her dorm assignment. She is in Morriss in a single. What’s this dorm like? Heard it was a little worn down. Heard the cafeteria is just downstairs which is a plus.
@hufflepuffle thanks. My S is in New Pembroke. - have no info on any of the dorms. We shall see come August 20
@racketnet @BUalum93 Your kids should be able to access floor plans to their buildings by google searching “brown floor plans” and going from there (accessing the files requires a university login).
@racketnet @BUalim93 Both dorms (Morris and New Pembroke) are on the Pembroke campus, which has its own dining hall as well as a newly renovated space in Andrews for study and snacking. My D was in W. Andrews freshman year and found it to be fine, location-wise. It is a couple of blocks north of the main quad, maybe a 5-10 minute walk to Barrus Holley (Engineering), close to Thayer Street and both dorms are pretty basic college dorms. I haven’t been in New Pembroke for years. It is kind of a '70’s modern structure (structures) and Morris is more of a '60s kind of look. It will offer each of your kids the typical freshman experience. New Pembroke, the outside, should be pretty easy to see on Google Street View, corner of Thayer and Bowen. The end of Morris can be seen, most likely, from the corner of Thayer and Cushing Street. I think Morris has a small exercise room, though Pembroke is only a couple of blocks from the Nelson Center with pool and tons of fitness equipment (also close to ice skating/Meehan Auditorium and Pizzitola athletic center).
A question for old hands: if a student’s roommate is an early arriver due to one of the orientation programs, can the student move at least some stuff in early, say the day or so before official move-in?
It doesn’t seem like that would be a problem. The dorms don’t have front desks. I don’t think it would be noticed or that anyone would mind.
Just a reminder that the dorms aren’t air-conditioned. We were glad that we had brought a fan with us that we could turn on right away instead of having to wait for a shopping trip to BB&B.
Re: moving in early. You could probably move stuff in, but wouldn’t get a key or tap card for outside door I don’t think.
Yeah, I moved a bunch of my stuff in a day early this way - it was nice to get some of it in before the huge rush. You won’t get personal access to the building until the scheduled day, though.
Thanks @ciervo, @bonenz and @bruno14 — these answers are helpful and just what I was hoping. We don’t care about personal access so much as the schlep during the big move-in rush.
Thanks @ciervo re post #29 - we already have fans and are familiar with the heat of dorms in September… so yes, an excellent piece of advice for those not familiar with Northeast late summers and mid springs!
@bruno14 Seekonk BBB empty today! Great tip
We were in Seekonk BBB two weeks ago and it was great. They even let me apply my coupon that I forgot to use when picking up son’s stuff at the Providence Mall so that I wouldn’t have to drive into town again. That’s service.
