Moving in Fall 2010 for Sophomores and up

I am currently a freshman at Brown and would like to know (from upperclassmen’s experience) when to arrive back in Providence to move back in and get ready for the next year. I plan on putting my stuff in storage since I’m from California, and have several questions about that as well. Basically:

What date should I get to Brown if classes start on Sept. 1? So how many days in advance?

With reference to storage, what are the companies, rates(from past years, if remembered; by month? for the whole summer?), and tips for getting the best deal! This is a big investment I heard and I would like my $ to go toward tuition not storing my winter coats and boots.

Thanks!

If I remember Storage Center picked up my stuff from my room and it was $180 for the summer. One thing to make sure to do is inventory what you put in storage (how many boxes) just in case. Storage Center was the cheapest I had found.

I think the dorm keys are not distributed until the Sunday before classes start. Unless your roommate can get into the room earlier (for example, those doing BOLT get in earlier), there’s no point in arriving before Sunday. (You should doublecheck that date.)

you can request an early arrival if you want a couple more days to organize.

That’s true, but you have to pay for it.

For Storage Center, are you allowed to have multiple people store their stuff together? It seems like everything I should need to store will fit in my refrigerator… and it’d be cheaper to just donate then buy a new fridge/microwave rather than store it seperately

Not sure, you could just put everything together and make it look like it’s all yours. I think there’s a limit of how much you can have so don’t go crazy.

so I entered the brown lottery for storage vouchers and didn’t get one… now I’m stressed about the cost of storing my stuff. I have lots to store - fridge, microwave, winter clothes/boots, etc.

Can anyone give me a rough estimate of how much it’s going to cost; exact name of storage company; how it works - price per box, etc?? I have asked around and everyone vaguely says “very expensive” and says oh with Brown’s preferred storage company…

@Calistudent: We are from the West Coast and our son is going to store all of his things over the summer. This is the information I scoped out for him.

The “Storage Center” is the company Brown Student Agencies has set up to provide storage services. The Storage Center will be on campus starting the week of May 17th through May 22nd to sell boxes, packing supplies, and to collect your storage items. They will be at the following locations:

 • Meeting St (in front of Emery-Woolley Hall)
 • Thayer and Charlesfield intersection (grad center dorms and new dorm A etc.)
