@anzhilin yea, inevitably, you will be compared to ur peers because it gives a more accurate account of ur application as opposed to comparing you to a kid in Nebraska or even another high school in ur county. Usually around 10 kids in our school apply and 5 or so get in.
Only I applied from my school. So noone to compare.
Okay, that’s not too bad if around half are accepted. We have some really qualified applicants from our school, although I’m not too sure how many.
2 people from my school applying. And roughly 2 people from my school have ever heard of Emory.
well yea emory is not too popular within my school. Everyone knows the university in my school but of our top 10% (30 of around 300). Emory itself is not that favored at least in my school.
So I logged in to OPSU and clicked on view dicision letter and it says I can’t review the decision at this time??? What does this mean? Did anybody here get a chance to see their letters?
@beaglee105 It’s been saying this for months - ever since I set my account up. Presumably, this will change when the decision letter is posted. The decision date is tomorrow.
Is Emory anyone’s first choice here? I was hands down for NYU at first (only reason I didn’t ED NYU was that price tag). However, after doing some more research I’m on the fence between NYU and Emory right now. (Honestly speaking, I’d be lucky to get into either of those unis).
is anyone else’s portal just horribly formatted? Every time I open it I cringe. The only thing that comes up when I open it is a folder saying student center, is this the same for anyone else?
Another one of my FA documents was completed. Hopefully this is a good sign? Maybe?
@mat324. Yeah, I don’t really like the portal. It’s not easy to use and is visually unappealing. All other colleges I’ve applied to have easy, visually agreeable portals but Emory’s sucks.
My FA documents are still showing up as initiated. Who should I contact?
I can’t find my financial aid info anywhere? Where are people looking?
@DominicBayer : Isn’t Duke’s very similar to Emory’s (not a particularly good interface either. I think they had some version of PeopleSoft)? Emory’s never great at the Tech thing, but I don’t know what Duke’s excuse is/was.
@anzhilin : This is the RD section with many RD applicants just being a lot of folks applying to a whole slew of schools attempting to get into the highest ranked one possible regardless of it is a fit or not (also, in general, only a few schools differ so much from the other elites that a student can tell they ONLY fit at that school and Emory isn’t one of them). I’m willing to guess many RD applicants still don’t really do serious research on Emory (or many of their places for that matter). I think you’ll only find a few with Emory as a first or second choice as rank and lay prestige matter and Emory is the noob and isn’t as effective at marketing meaning many won’t even know what it is whereas many comparable caliber schools will be very well-known. All the places ranked between like 15-25 are more well-known (been in the AAU longer so have been relevant as research universities for a longer period of time) except maybe Rice and WUSTL which have similar levels of lay prestige but is preferred over Emory generally. I didn’t apply there so cannot claim to know why other than ranking and different programmatic offerings. Like Emory is one of the only elite privates without engineering so that hurts. D-3 + that is a double whammy unless marketing is super effective. That plus location even hurts. Even if Emory’s signature programs such as business were better than counterparts, I believe schools with good b-schools in the northeast or closer to Chicago (ND) would end up more popular.
With that said, Emory gets a fair share of ED applicants (usually over 10% of the applicant pool. I’m going to assume application numbers dropped this year because the “E.bola bump” from last year was unlikely to be sustained, so ED applicants were nicely over 10% if app. numbers dropped back down to say 17-18k. Furthermore, they fill half of the spots with ED admits)
@bernie12. Sorry, I don’t really know about Duke’s portal, as I didn’t apply there. In addition to applying to Emory, I applied to 5 Ivies, Stanford, Northwestern and Georgetown, all of whom had nicer portals than Emory.
As would be expected.
@bernie12 I honestly was not expecting too many to seriously consider Emory as a first or second choice in the RD pool. However, given my circumstances for choosing RD over ED in NYU, there was a slight chance, in my mind, that there may have been at least a couple applicants in the same boat as me. Besides, as time goes on, it’s possible for people who were originally half-hearted about their application to have a change of heart after more research. After doing more research, I regret not applying to certain colleges.
I can’t say anything about the lay prestige of these different schools as I principally chose the 5 OOS colleges I applied to based on their respective business programs (You could say that was a prerequisite; then, I looked at each of the ones and evaluated their location, student life, and job placement/opportunity, and general ambiance I got from them). The one exception to that was Emory. I visited that school in the spring of my junior year, and that’s how I became acquainted with the university. I agree with you about Emory’s marketing though. Their publicity is much lower than other colleges ranked similarly to it (UNC-CH, NYU, and Berkeley to mention a few).
I’m interested in knowing why you think Emory’s location would be to its disadvantage though? Although Emory itself is located in somewhat of a college town (Druid Hills isn’t really my definition of urban), it’s only a few minutes away from Atlanta, and GTech applicants don’t seem to have a problem with this placement.
@anzhilin Emory is definitely my top choice! Its location next to the CDC is prime for my intended field
Emory has been my top choice since ed1, however, I didnt make the cut so I am hoping that I will be able to attend oxford. Also applicants had actually reached record amounts this year. Ed1 applicants actually rose 3-5%.
@life104 can you say just how much more competitive this year has been? I found an article from last year but none was written for this year.
