Being waitlisted might be good since all this Trump chalk scandal is going on ;).
@anzhilin Emory has a beautiful campus and is incredible for science and medicine. However, Emory is in a generally less desirable suburb/location (albeit beautiful but east side) of Atlanta and it is not easy to have a social life outside of Emory. Decatur is cute, but it has dangerous areas. But if you visited, then you know that. Young people hang out in Midtown, Virginia Highlands, and Buckhead mostly and if you are going to uber either to drink or don’t have car, then you will have large tabs for the rides to Buckhead or Midtown. Virginia Highlands not too far. .When you start getting into Buckhead and other areas, it can be rather southern which I love, but you have to know this is the South. Mass transit is iffy from a safety standpoint. Ga Tech is right off highway and very near what is going on- completely different location. Plus Georgia students first choice is often GaTech (or UGA) due to tuition difference plus Hope scholarships make it practically free. @life104 I think most schools have seen a surge in applications this year, at least all of the ones to which I have applied.
@anzhilin That being said, if you are a city person, NYU is your school, if you don’t care about being in college town, Emory is great. It is like apples and oranges as to lifestyle and if you want to work in Atlanta, the best career positions will be with the big corporate players and with NYU you have more diverse type of positions. People in the Georgia are obsessed with college football, and that is probably one reason why Emory is also not a local favorite and less alumni in Atlanta. And piggybacking with what one other person said, when I was considering Emory, several people said to me,where is that? and made a face when I said Atlanta. I love the South, but many people in East and West don’t.
@anzhilin : I wasn’t going where @jaxson was going. I had those who want finance or business in mind. Many students are from up north or the mid-Atlantic considering elite schools and it isn’t that Atlanta is undesirable so much as it being less of a recruiting target for big companies up north (to overcome the regional bias, you pretty much have to be on Duke or Chicago’s level). With that said, GBS students do quite well and make as much leaving Emory as comparably ranked BBA programs (top 10 or so). Also, the same could be said if you’re interested in Tech. While entrepreneurship and interests in Technology has really blown up at Emory, that doesn’t make it a target for tech companies (that would be Tech!). Comparing Tech to Emory is like comparing apples to oranges. Emory has a large STEM population that is almost too biased toward pre-health whereas Tech has those interested in all facets of STEM (as it is a STEM school), and as an elite STEM school, it is of course among institutions that get first pick from Tech recruiters. I wasn’t thinking of how the location influences the social life (of course Tech isn’t a problem when it comes to recreation access as it is in midtown!)
@life104 : That’s the early rounds. Most of the applications come from the regular/late round. We still don’t know if there was an increase there yet. I would be happily surprised and impressed if it held steady (like 19-20k) or increased some once RD is taken into account.
@jaxson : What people honestly must realize is that a place like Atlanta still has some southerness to it but is generally a different animal that doesn’t differ too much from other large US cities in terms of “character”(perhaps because of all of the “transplants”) other than the suburban sprawl and tree coverage for example.
@bernie12 I grew up in Chicago, lived in Atlanta for 5 years before high school, and lived in NYC and LA for the past 4 years. Atlanta largely differs from Boston, Chicago, NYC, LA–Atlanta does have transplants but it still has a southern mindset that is pervasive in business (not in a bad way). I love Atlanta and Emory is an outstanding education with a diverse student body.

decision comes in 4 hours and my heart is pounding. Good luck everyone! :-SS
good luck to everyone who applied!
My Common App essay was 10/10 but my Emory essay was a solid 6.
My Emory essay was written literally at a 7th grade level lmao I have no hope for this
@Kasami don’t worry. I’m right there with you in that same boat ;-; rip emory
someone mentioned likely letters. I do not believe anyone got likely letters except if you were admitted and qualified for “essence of emory” otherwise if you were a RD candidate I think everyone notified tonight. Emory used to do likely letters many yrs ago.
Good luck to everyone! @Kasami you never know what appeals to admissions! Hope it works out for you!
@jaxson agree with everything you said. HOPE it works out with Emory but if not remember to LOVE THE SCHOOL(S) THAT LOVE YOU BACK! IF its emory, great, but if not than another lucky school you can be happy and thrive at academically and socially. Also remember that sometimes its better to be a big fish in a little pond(less selective school) than a little fish in a big pond(highly selective schools). So a neighbor just told me her oldest two did go to Emory and did very well but her youngest went to a small less selective all girls college in atlanta and just won the Marshall scholarship( very very prestigious). she was convinced this wouldnt have happened had she gone to a more selective school.
