Class of 2020 RD Dicussion

Pre-med, but I plan on majoring in Applied Math or BME. I got denied to the BME program in Hopkins but got into the rest of the school. @bernie12

Though I did not apply to any of the schools on that list, does anybody think I should still ask them to possibly reevaluate my aid with my package from another school that gave me more money (Boston College)? I don’t want to sound desperate but I was a bit surprised that I received less from Emory.

@Bulldog97 : Absolutely…unless they are using need aid as de facto merit aid (trying to reward/compete for those who applied successfully to other schools of similar or higher caliber only which wouldn’t be fair because it assumes that every high caliber student admitted to Emory also applied to these schools which, while true in many cases, is not always the case. Many do view Emory in a similar light to larger Liberal Arts type of Colleges like BC).

@XAtlas : How about CMU and Vanderbilt? Were you admitted engineering or applied sciences at those schools? I think CMU could be really good but so is Vanderbilt for this. Emory could be good for quantitative disciplines that are non hard/applied science, but the others by virtue of structure (and historical strengths) are going to be much more fitting for someone truly interested in applied sciences. Unless Emory offered you much more than the others, it really shouldn’t be on the table unless there is something else you potentially see yourself doing at Emory that is done well.

@bernie12 For CMU, I was admitted to their engineering and their science schools. For Vanderbilt, I got into CAS (engineering was my second choice). I guess I am just drawn to Emory because of its location (near the CDC). Some of my classmates tell me it’s a no brainer just go to Hopkins (they say Emory is just a worse of Hopkins which I do not necessarily agree with). Of course, I like all these schools and the money is all similar.

How is JHU a no brainer when you got into CMU’s engineering school? Your friends must be ranking and prestige driven. Quality and reality must not be playing much of a role in their perceptions, no offense as I know how I and many people were at your stage and many of us knew no better.

Yea, of course, no offense taken. Thanks for the insight.

I got into JHU but by itself the award was relatively less…do you think i still have a shot at an increase in Emory Financial aid? :confused:

@BlackHuntress : If still remotely interested in attending Emory, then it can’t hurt. If you plan on going to JHU, why bother?

Im 100% interested in emory im just worried they wont consider increasing

I think you have a very good chance with those stats. My son got into Emory ED2 with very similar stats (almost identical). He also had SATIIs Biology (790) and Chem (760) and 4 and 5 on AP exams for those subjects. He did write a good interesting essay. Consider applying ED if Emory is your first choice.

@AsleepAtTheWheel: Only Emory can make the admit rate go up slightly and still admit slightly better students. Every other school must have both a lower admit rate and higher stats. I do believe Emory is still in “enrollment growth and yield conscious” phase.

Does anyone know how I decline my offer of admission? I assume I do it on OPUS, but I can’t figure it out. Thanks!

@overthinker3 : You don’t, you simply don’t pay a deposit…

@bernie12 okay, thanks for clearing that up!

Hi, I am trying to decide between Emory and Georgia Tech, as I want to be involved in the sciences with an additional interest in business.

@tennism, I realize this is a bit late but, for what it’s worth, you might find this thread interesting:

Good luck if you haven’t made a decision yet! They’re both great schools and I’m sure either will serve you well-

@812pacificon : interesting…
