Class of 2021 (Discussing application season, sharing, venting)

@marg928 i live in asia  and i was talking about my chapman acceptance, not calarts

So, it seems that U Mich. has started notifications for the SMTD - My daughter has not heard anything yet, but there are folks sharing their good news in this thread - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1965724-university-of-michigan-2021-smtd-admission.html

(Hoping no news isnā€™t bad news!)

Update on my auditions (very delayed because I moved halfway across the country :P): I got a rejection letter from UNCSA last week. They did ask me to audition again next year and I read what someone said about that earlier. Donā€™t know if it is normal now or what. It kind sucks because my uncle lived an hour away from there and I barely get to see him anymoreā€¦ but I guess it just wasnā€™t meant to be.

Havenā€™t heard back from UCLA, CalArts, or UCSD yet. Anxiously waitingā€¦ has anyone heard back from them yet? Am a little confident about CalArts (but not getting too attached) because I was asked to do an extra monologue during my audition which one of the staff members had previously told me via email that that is their version of a callback.

Keeping my fingers crossed but trying not to get overly set on a school knowing how small a percentage get in. Congrats to everyone who has heard acceptances so far though, itā€™s really great to hear <3

@abblesauce sorry about UNCSA. My D got on the waitlist and I know of one other girl on the waitlist. CalArts started notifying on Thursday. So far Iā€™ve heard of three acceptances on CC but no rejections yet. I had emailed them earlier in the week and they told me they would be making acceptances into next week. I will tell you though, that they never sent my D an email. After hearing of the two acceptances on CC on Thursday, I checked my Dā€™s portal and nothing was there. I checked again on Friday morning and lo and behold the portal had been updated with a link to her acceptance letter. So thereā€™s a chance yours is updated too even if you havenā€™t heard from them. The UC schools have not started notifying yet. Thereā€™s an active thread for UCSD and from what Iā€™ve been reading on there some people have been getting communications from them which is supposed to be an indication of acceptance. We havenā€™t heard anything. Here are some other threads you can follow:

@LuvsLabs I have been keeping an eye out for SMTD too. My daughter did get her acceptance Tuesday for VP. I have only read one other person indicating they have gotten a notification from SMTD for BFA Acting. I really thought we would be hearing about theatre acceptances Friday :(. Itā€™s my belief that very few were contacted, to dateā€¦so keep the faith! We are!

Has anyone ever heard of (from a reliable source) people getting full ride scholarships for theatre or music? I mean a scholarship based on just talent and not grades or scores. Iā€™ve heard a couple of people say that in the past and Iā€™m wondering if they were misinformed about things or just exited and overstating what their scholarship was.

I have never heard of a talent based full ride scholarship at any BFA program. Doesnā€™t mean it doesnā€™t exist, just that I havenā€™t heard of it  In fact, I have never heard of major $$ coming from talent. Need and/or merit are where the $$ is.

@toowonderful That is what I thought.

@NicMusic , I also have never heard of full ride scholarships for theatre or music. Some programs have more scholarship money for the musical side of things than the theatre side (Belmont for one), but most schools we have researched gave money for need or really great test scores. Lipscomb University in Nashville does offer merit aid (lower scores get merit aid also) and they have theatre scholarships also! They are also building a new Performing Arts center within the next 2 years.

@NicMusic My best friend got a nearly full ride to Carnegie Mellon based on an artist scholarship.

@actorboy27 - are you certain it was artistic only? I think Carnegie does well with need, but what I remember Barbara Mackenzie Wood saying is that there was not a lot of talent $$ to go around. Obviously you know your friend and we do not- but in my experience, kids are not always fully certain what aspects of aide are need/merit/talent based - they just know they got ā€œXā€ in scholarship

@toowonderful It was artistic, yes. It would have been cheaper for him to have attended CMU than SUNY Purchase (we are both in state), but he ultimately picked a different school entirely haha.

@ actorboy27 - then your friend was very fortunate, and very unique - but I still would SRONGLY warn against planniing pay for colllege by counting on full ride artistic scholarships

@NicMusic my friend got a full ride to Northern Arizona for music (vocal performance)

@marg928 thanks so much! & congrats to your D on all her success so far this year! My mail is being transferred from Chicago to San Diego so keeping my fingers crossed that there is a CalArts letter coming my way a bit late. Is the portal youā€™re talking about the VIP page or the application page? Neither have changed but am still curious.

@abblesauce either one. I logged into the VIP page and saw a blue banner ā€œADMISSIONS DECISIONā€ with a link that said ā€œyour admission decision is now ready. Please log into your applicationā€. That link brings you to the application where you have to log in again. Like I said, I noticed it there Friday morning and they finally sent an email at 7pm on Friday (Eastern time). No physical letter yet. That is so exciting youā€™re moving to SD! Iā€™m crossing my fingers you will be accepted to an in state school and save your parents a lot of money!

What an amazing experience my D had this weekend at the Minn/Guthrie callbacks! Of course there was the airfare expense which wasnā€™t cheap but she didnā€™t have to spend any money all weekend. They housed and fed the kids, took them to see two shows, and gave them workshops all weekend. She made connections that may very well last a long time. She believes she met her best friend thereā€¦she said she bawled her eyes out last night on the plane coming home just thinking that she may not see these people ever again. She loved the faculty and the current studentsā€¦she said they were all so welcoming. And she also loved the programā€¦it is very student centered. The shows are not big productions with fancy sets because itā€™s all about developing the actor. They even said they allow kids to take a leave of absence to do outside work. Even if she doesnā€™t get accepted the weekend was so totally worth it! The only thing I would have liked was for them to find time to take the kids on a tour of the campus. They told us we needed to schedule that ourselves through admissions but I didnā€™t see when there was even time for that with the packed schedule of activities. University of Minnesota is a class act!

Wow, @marg928, that sounds awesome! And theyā€™ll even let kids take a leave of absence to do outside work - that would solve her dilemma with the agent! Fingers and toes crossed that your daughter gets in!

It looks like the U-Mich portal for BFA Acting decisions has posted.

U Minn guthrie is a fantastic program. I donā€™t have a lot of regrets about my Sā€™s process, but I wish heā€™d applied there and UNSCA.
