Class of 2021 (Discussing application season, sharing, venting)

@Jkellynh17 I am posting for the very first time today. (just had a little rant over on the MT share. I feel better. No one else does probably, but I had to get it off my chest.) Anyway, I just wanted to say that I have noticed how sweet, supportive, and encouraging you have been to all the other parents. Thank you for that! This process is horrible and that little bit of kindness makes all the difference in the world even when it isn’t even directed to you. I hope you have a great day!

Oh you’re welcome. We had a pretty shitty audition year four years ago, but everything worked out okay in the end. Hope the same is true for you. (BTW, we considered trying again the next year, possibly with coaching, and probably would have if we didn’t get one good offer.)

@marg928 I feel your pain, I was unsure if we had the right amount of schools also, especially since late in the game my D decided she would rather Acting over MT! Ack…We threw a few in last minute, sadly some schools she liked did not look at Acting if you auditioned MT EVEN IF the acting teacher was in the audition, which makes no sense to me at all. People keep saying it will all work out in the end and I just keep holding the faith that it will. Good Luck to everyone in these last two final weeks!

if anyone has been accepted into Missouri State Im interested in starting a groupchat or FB page, so message me!

@avonweasley I’ll PM you

Can someone point me to a resume example that contains acting, production, AND playwriting? My son will be applying to BA theatre programs and I can’t seem to find one that works. At his PA high school, he has acted, stage managed, directed, and written one act plays. I’d like to include all of these things to show BA programs how diverse his experience is.

I second @Ouiser! Both @Jkellynh17 and @bfahopeful, moms who have been through this before, have been incredibly supportive to all of us first-timers here on this forum. Thank you both!!

@Twoboysandadog One of the BA programs that my daughter applied to required a comprehensive resume that needed to include a lot more information than her one-page BFA Acting resumes included. It ended up being two pages long, and it had multiple sections with headings in bold and all-caps that included “Performance”, “Stage Management”, “Film Production Assistant”, and more. In some cases, like for Film Production Assistant, she only had one item in the section. Maybe you can picture how this might look? I thought the final product looked great. And it was apparently effective - she got admitted to that BA program. :slight_smile:

@Janine1 Yes, I can picture that and that does seem to be the best way. Thank you! I guess I just worried about going over one page.

Thanks @Janine1 :slight_smile:

@Twoboysandadog I personally think it’s fine to go to 2 pages with certain types of specialty resumes. Out of 11 applications this year my daughter used a 2-page resume twice. Once with that BA program I just mentioned, and once with the Boston Conservatory BFA “Artistic Resume” which required a ton of information.

Hi! My S has been waitlisted for CalArts BFA Acting - any idea what the chances are of making it in?

Also, he was accepted at Emerson! YAY! 5 rejections so it is great to have one acceptance and one waitlist. Does anyone know what size the Theatre Performance class is?

And rejected from BU today too…rejections are getting harder. D is getting deflated. Making our decision easier - so far Elon BFA acting looks like its where she will be unless Syracuse, USC, NYU, CMU magically say yes. Still waiting on academic for Elon though. Even though there has been one yes with multiple BA options, putting yourself out there and secretly hoping to be accepted to them all and only one says yes is hard to swallow. Just like everyone else, all that work put into essays, apps, auditions, travel…exhausting. Almost there

Question re: U of Arts callbacks. I’ve read that they don’t do callbacks for straight Acting BFA’s, just for MT? Has that been the case for those of you whose kids have been admitted into u of arts acting?

@meggysmom Right, no callbacks for straight acting. We are going out for Accepted students day on Apr. 1st.

@remartin67, thank you!! Did your son audition on campus? My d auditioned there yesterday but it was an odd experience. She was registered and on the main list when we checked in, but when she was taken to audition room, it was disorganized and her name wasn’t on the audition list. She was auditioning for straight acting, but was put in front of the head of the MT dept and another vocal coach or someone related to vocal training maybe. Anyhow, a student scribbled down her name (didn’t even ask for spelling which is worrisome, since my our last name is uncommon) . My d said her audition went very well, that they auditors were connected and one even teared up during her dramatic monologue. But then she wasn’t on the callback list, so it was very confusing/upsetting for her. We didn’t know if it was a glitch in the system because she wasn’t entered in the computer, or whether she misread the (positive) vibe in the audition room. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens, but wasn’t sure what to make of this confusing audition…

@meggysmom - My S auditioned at Chicago Unifieds. Does sound like something might have been off that day at UArts. Maybe they were using an MT teacher to evaluate BFA Acting for some reason. Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about not being on the callback list–I would assume that’s because she’s not MT. Did they tell you when to expect an answer? I seem to recall they say about 2 weeks.

@Twoboysandadog can you split his resume into on-stage experience and off-stage experience? My son too has plenty of off-stage experience. We wound up with a 2 page resume which I think is fine for this level. Will get it down to a page after college :slight_smile:
