If you do a search you can find lots more about the different programs. As @Janine1 says above it’s good to be aware of schools that also offer a MFA; we generally avoided them.
I’m so relieved…got a call from CaLARTS and they said my D can shadow a student the week we are visiting CA…at first she had said it would be too late because the students would already be going into reviews week.
hey guys, i read these threads all the time but this is my first post. I know this going to sounds so so stupid but I auditioned for a school as a walk in without doing research first (so smart i know) and i just found out today on their website that the audition needed a shakespeare monologue! yikes! needless to say i did not do one, and i was wondering if this was going to stop me all together from getting into the program as i’ve actually grown to like it a lot
@EMVP66 yes my son is thrilled with his Emerson experience. However, he knows his brother and thinks that he would be happier with a more rigorous training program. He also would tell any of you that BFA and BA are only letters and you get out of any good program what you put in. He feels that BA programs are great for those who like to design their own curriculum and take different classes than a BFA would allow, he thinks the Emerson BA program was getting a bad rap from students unnecessarily feeling “less than” and is glad for that reason alone that they are calling it a BFA. We just spoke a little while ago and he says his greatest “take-away” as he looks back at the last four years, are his connections. He is heading to LA and truly has a spot in the Emerson Mafia (NYC has even more of them I believe so you/he can’t go wrong either way.) Now, whether this is from someone scared to death to be graduating and heading out on his own who is feeling ever so grateful that he knows others in a similar situation or from someone whose connections will be a foot in the door, remains to be seen. I do know from my perspective that there could not be a better fit for a child and a school than this one has been and I only hope I have the same experience this last time around.
@marg928 my son got notice of a Point Park artistic scholarship yesterday as well and a generous one at that. We however know very little about the program, it seems to be solid for dance but not sure about MT or acting. I am finding it difficult to turn away from some of these offers from school at the middle or bottom of our list and we seem to have some of the same schools so I was wondering if you were having a similar dilemma? Does anyone have information on Point Park’s acting program?
@ANJALU My D got in the mail today from Point Park academic and artistic scholarship for the BA in Theatre Arts Performance and Practices program. We don’t know anything about the school or program since she did it as a walk-in at Chicago Unifieds. Elon gave a little less than them but the tuition and room and board is about the same. Factor in the cost of travel from NC to PA and Elon is only 3.5 hours from us and its a BFA. But wondering if she should visit just to know for sure. Both accepted students weekends are the same.
Just wondering – if accepted as BFA Acting at Point Park, would it be possible to ask for BA Performance & Practice admit instead? It seems that the BA program would allow a bit more room for adding in voice and dance as electives. But I may be wrong about that.
@CollegeDadofTwo - not to answer for @Jkellynh17 - but I generally referred to my D’s college auditions 3 years ago as something “We” were doing. She was the one in the room (and the one who got into a great program) but she didn’t get there on her own. #Team
@Reckless, I think you might be talking about Hannah M. If so, she did transfer from DePaul to CMU, but it was in directing. As I recall, CMU had been her first choice, but she was waitlisted. When a spot opened up Sophomore year, she made the change.
@CollegeDadofTwo, if you’re referring to @Jkellynh17’s post #881, she said “We had a pretty **** audition year four years ago”, read that more closely. She said “audition year”, not “audition”. No question the audition year is a family affair for those kids fortunate enough to have family support. And I agree @toowonderful, cheers to the students who have done this on their own!
@ANJALU I know what you mean…Cornish gave my D the most money but it’s not at the top of the list as far as reputation goes…not to say it’s not good but it’s not as well known I guess. I hate to just disregard it though! I was trying to plan a trip to both Seattle and LA during spring break but so far it hasn’t worked out. Not sure if I can get her there before May 1st unfortunately. Point Park has a good rep though but we haven’t visited there either. I would like to though…I know @daughtersdreams said they really liked it.
