Class of 2021 (Discussing application season, sharing, venting)

@marg928 No audition feedback. Just found out a no from CMU artistically and another wait list academically. This process is really blowing my mind. There doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason. Right now we are looking at 2 awesome options, USC and NU, but not much money. Really was not planning on spending $250,000- $300,000 on college. Such a different experience from my older kids. Of course there is the whole artistic piece, but the academic piece seems to have become so much more competitive as well.

@marg928 I am sorry about USC. Again, there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or resins to acceptances or rejections. I am sure the colleges have their formulas, but I can’t figure them out.

@BandMom55 did you get two decisions
From CMU? I thought if applying to the BFA in MT or acting they gave one decision only and didn’t offer academic admits separately.

Unless that changed they must have seen something very special in your daughter to do that.
Congrats on USC and NU. Both are amazing.

Hi All,
I just want to thank everyone for sharing their experiences. While S and I refine the list for his senior year next year, I feel I’ve learned so much from you. I’m so grateful for this community.

Rejection from CMU today, wasn’t expecting anything more and it was the last school I heard from so I’m glad the wait’s over. Waitlisted at Barnard, but I’ve decided on Muhlenberg. The year has been crazy with audition season but I’m so excited to be going to a kickass theatre school in a few months!

Congrats on the decision @avonweasley! I know you have friends there so that’s definitely a plus!

ok so based on what @BandMom55 said, American only gives audition feedback to accepted students. That tells me a spring admit is considered an acceptance whereas a waitlist is not…interesting.

We can’t get on the USC Portal…ARGHHHHHHH Any suggestions?

@marg928 My S noticed on the CalArts Class of 2021 that he recognizes your daughter from the NY auditions! He is the boy from Montreal! He just sent a request to join the FB group - figures waitlisted is good enough!

No to USC- so that is that! It is a relief really that we are done wth the waiting…

@marg928 I believe you are right. i would say a spring admit means you are defiantly in, if you can wait the extra semester. If my child decided to do this, I would try to see if she could take gen ed classes at a local state school to satisfy those requirements and start in the Spring. Just a thought. My D was definitely wait listed for academic, not MT. I checked Naviance this am at our school and it looks like they wait list kids that may have academic stats well above their average. For us, we wanted a safety where she may get some merit money and would also be happy at. My D loves MT first, flowed by history and government. So AU seemed like a good fit if she had no success with auditions.

@bfahopeful Yes, I am quite sure that her wait list status is for the Arts and Sciences, not MT. (I did not see it, but according to her) Another boy from our school is a freshman there after being denied from the theatre department. Unfortunately, he is very unhappy there. Feels that the school is all about engineering and MT, theatre. We will be crossing it off our list.

@marg928 @BandMom55 My D also got the Spring 2018 admit, but no letter from MT - though it still says MT as her intended major. I don’t get this as a program concept, but these students are admitted to American to start in Spring 2018 whether or not they do American’s mentoring program or general ed requirements elsewhere. I also have seen that they waitlist students with scores high above the average, assuming they are using the school as a safety. If they love and contact the school, I’d imagine they’d come off the list.

@EMVP66 OMG I was just thinking about your son andI wondered what schools he got into! We ran into him at three different auditions!

So No from CMU and USC yesterday. Now just waiting on NYU and Syracuse. Praise the lord we have one solid BFA acceptance at Elon, otherwise my D would be devastated. The rejections are a little easier to take, although still disappointing. Hang in there everyone, its almost over!

@WhiteRaven1 There is a good thread on the MT board about asking for more money… You might get some good advice there.

@marg928 Small world!!! Looks like your daughter has done super well! Congrats! He has accepted at Emerson and is hoping in the meantime that he will be admitted to CalArts. But who knows, he may go the admitted students day at Emerson and forget about anywhere else. The US system is such a different world from here. Here, we don’t have SATs, college applications are very simple and you apply to only a few. SO it really was a a learning curve! He decided in September to apply, do SATs, get coaching etc so I am so happy that he has had success. Of course, we dreamed of more acceptances but who doesn’t! And who knows…maybe they will end up at CalArts together!

My daughter is interested in Theater/Acting (not musical theater) undergrad and is deciding between UCSB, UCSD, and UCI. She also got into LMU and APU BFA.
Any insight or help?? Thanks!!

@lex’smom she has some great acceptances there! My D applied to 23 schools including all the schools you mentioned except APU (not sure what school that is). We are OOS so she didn’t have much luck at the UC schools…only waitlist at UCI. She is seriously considering LMU though. I myself would love to hear more about LMU’s program…there is not much on CC.

@lex’smom My D has close friends in the acting programs at UCSB, UCSD and UCI. They are all excellent programs but I would say the emphasis st UCI is heavier on MT. Of the three options the acting program at UCSD is probably the strongest. It is top notch and has close ties with the Old Globe theatre in SD. UCSB also has a strong program but not quite as many acting opportunities in SB as there are in SD. All of her friends are flourishing in their respective programs and I’m sure she would get wonderful training at any of them.
