Class of 2021 (Discussing application season, sharing, venting)

We know two people who came off the waitlist last year. It occurred after the May 1st commitment deadline but before high school school ended in June.

So just as we were about to decide between UCSD, UCSB & UCI for acting, she gets into NYU! Great, but with no financial assistance! She is excited and I am stressed out!!!

Congratulations @lex’smom! My daughter is graduating in May from Tisch Drama, so please feel free to ask me any questions!

congrats @lex’smom- at least you know. I’m sure they won’t have any money left coming off the wait list. With a wait list would they tell you if you would get any financial aid? that would be the deciding factor. Congrats @momto2artists. Thanks for the info and encouraging info about the wait list @Twoboysandadog

@kaf011 The NYU wait list FAQ says this re: aid if you come off the list:

If we are able to offer you admission, we will consider you for need-based and merit-based financial aid, assuming you have already completed our required financial aid forms online by our respective deadlines earlier this winter. If we are able to offer you admission, we will not expect you to commit to enrolling at NYU until after you review your financial aid award.

@kaf011 - congrats on waitlist!! My D was admitted directly- so I have no knowledge of how waitlist works

Thanks for the info @momto2artists. We are poor in NYU eyes and need money! LOL

Same here @kaf011!

My D came off NYU waitlist on April 29 last year (she auditioned for any studio; ended up in Adler). She knows several others who did as well. There will be a fair amount of movement.

@jbtcat She is so excited to be admitted into the BFA Theater, but do you think I can negotiate some financial aid? They only gave her $3,000 work study. No money at all. It’s so expensive! I am a teacher. But I hate to deprive her of this amazing opportunity!!

@lex’smom, this is not the only amazing opportunity, so you wouldn’t be depriving your D, IMO. Yes, NYU is terrific, but there are many, many terrific programs and opportunities at and outside of other programs–for artistic and intellectual/academic reasons! Try not to get caught up in it, and do not feel guilty if you can’t afford it. Many cannot. And guess what? It’s ok!

Good luck with your decision.

I think we will start to see movement on wait-lists, my S has narrowed his choice down between three so I encouraged him to notify the other schools that he decided not pursue so that those who are perhaps waiting on a particular school to which he had been accepted might get some answers. I am sure others kids will soon release spots too. I look forward to seeing where all our kids land and begin this next exciting chapter of their lives.

@lex’smom I would definitely try negotiating with NYU. My daughter had scholarship offers from other schools and we used those to negotiate with NYU and they matched the offer. They are also committed to providing more financial aid to students in need so it is worth trying to plead your case. The worst they can do is say no. I know people say that NYU is not good at giving money, but they were good to us and even in her senior year my daughter was awarded additional scholarship money to help reduce her student debt once she graduates. Good luck!

D got waited at Syracuse too! Way to end the month. She got her letter from Fordham, she didn’t get into the audition BA but to any other major. They gave her the difference between COA and our EFC. I thought all schools did. brought it down.

Posting in duplicate threads b/c I made a mistake the first time …NYU Tisch is a YES. Very happy for my D! She’s a great kid and worked so hard but thought she bombed her audition. Just proves that this is an unpredictable process and you have to stay positive. Probably much like being a professional actor. If she chooses otherwise (she loves Temple) I know there are some great kids on the Tisch WL!!

@jbtcat Thank you for the information. I would love for her to have this opportunity, but it is so far from California!! I can’t imagine my daughter so far next year! She also got into UC Berkeley yesterday! Do you know anything about their program?

Does anyone have information about UC Berkeley Theater? Thank you!

@lex’smom Congrats! How amazing that she also got accepted into UC Berkeley! I don’t know much about the program but I’m sure it is wonderful. I totally know how you feel about her being so far away. I had the reverse coast situation with my daughter. She was accepted to both NYU and UCLA and California would have been across the country for us, so I was happy she chose NYU. Keep me posted! I can’t wait to hear where she ends up!

Anyone on here still waiting on Syracuse? I have twins and neither has heard a decision.

S received an endowed scholarship for acting from SEMO! We logged into his portal to explore course offerings, etc., and saw the offer. Love that this will stack with other merit aid! Happy dance!
