Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

So, we have one (awesome) yes, 5 nos and waiting on 4 notifications. We are supposed to leave today for Millikin for an audition tomorrow. D is coming off of bronchitis and doesn’t feel her voice is 100% and feels like she’d be “making a joke of herself” if she goes. If she doesn’t go, I’m out the application/audition fee and $100 for the hotel. I am so tired from all this I can’t make a decision to save my life. After all of this $$$ $150 doesn’t seem like a lot, but it is. Trying to reschedule is not an option either. ARGH! Help…what would you do?

@missnypizza as stated WKU is Western Kentucky University. It is a beautiful campus and the people are great. There are about 17,000 students with football, sororities, etc. This is a part of the college experience my daughter wanted and she has not been disappointed. She is also able to minor in ASL (American Sign Language) which was important to her. She is getting terrific training and has many performance opportunities. Let me know if you want more information.

If she thinks Millikin is a better option than the offer she has on the table, she should go audition. If it doesn’t go well she’ll probably never have to see those people again so no reason to feel like she is making a joke of herself.

@ALS0830 150 is a lot in our house too. BUT my thought would be…if she gets into Millikin, would she choose it over your other option and any of the ones you are waiting on? If the answer is No, I would just eat the 150 and relax this weekend. But that’s me. I am waaay into relaxing and chilling out when possible. You will make the right decision for you guys.

@ALS0830 My S auditioned for 3 schools in varying stages of bronchitis and a sinus infection. He wasn’t his best vocally and was completely wiped out after the dance calls (more so than usual). That being said, he did fairly well at those auditions nonetheless. His attitude of “whatever” kind of helped maybe? Milikin is a highly respected school and very competitive. It seems to me worth the shot. My best friend gave me advice that has always helped me make decisions like this: You only regret the chances and opportunities not taken. You never regret taking the chance to go. I recently went to a funeral that meant getting my butt up at the crack of dawn, arranging for child care, skipping a work day, spending tons of money on a train ride up and back, and generally not wanting to go (because funerals are not fun). I went nonetheless and it was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made. It meant so much to my cousin and it deepened my relationship with her and her children in a way that is truly without measure. Not exactly a great analogy, but my point is…if you don’t go, you and she will always wonder, what if…There are many days in our kids’ futures where they will dance in pain. sing while sick, and act when low energy. It is important to start as you mean to continue: No mercy. Go for it. etc. Break a leg if you go.

@ALS0830 How much travel are we talkin’? Would D choose Millikin over what’s already in hand? We had this same dilemna when D was auditioning. She soldiered through (it was 2 auditions in 2 days), because the schools were pretty high on her list; and she would have gone to either over the one acceptance she had at the time. Good luck!

Someone on here mentioned April 1st is coming…what does that mean? Am I supposed to to be doing something on April 1st besides playing a few jokes on people?

@ALS0830 Millikin has another audition date on 4/8. I happen to know as my D is scheduled for that day but I don’t think we are going to be attending. Perhaps if she is really interested in Millikin but just isn’t up to this weekend she can reschedule for the 4/8 date. And maybe if you talk with the hotel they will rebook you for the later date. Best of luck! I know how tired these kids are with this whole process at this point. My daughter almost dropped a couple of her last dates out of sheer exhaustion but I pushed her to follow through. It’s really tough.

@ALS0830 I was just typing the same thing as @sopranomtmom wrote above. My D is also scheduled on 4/8 and I think she is cancelling as well.

@ALS0830 Here’s what I would do. I would go to the hotel and have a wonderful girls’ weekend. Relax, shop, eat and spend one last glorious weekend with your girl. No audition, no pressure because before you know it she will be gone!! LOL

I knew I came to the right place. You are all so great! Its a 2 hour drive, overnight in the hotel, full day audition schedule. The school has a great reputation, but its in Decatur, Il, not like downtown Chicago. I am sure if it was between her one yes and Millikin she would NOT choose Millikin unless there was a TON of money involved. So, that said I am 60%" lets do this" 40% “kiss the $$ goodbye”. Currently having her try voice spray and a warm-up to see where she is vocally and a text to voice teacher for input. Did I miss anything? I feel like I am really overthinking this!

@ALS0830 - We got good money from Millikin. So it might be worth your while. PM me if you want.

D got a text and email from Hartt today. The email says Congratulations you have been accepted to The Hartt School at the University of Hartford. It goes on to offer her a scholarship. But it doesn’t specify program - she auditioned for MT. It doesn’t appear to be a redirect but it is so vague? I’m wondering if Hartt has a portal I can check?

I’ve never heard of Hartt redirecting.

@sopranomtmom check bottom of letter. Our letter with performing arts scholarship and acceptance to Hartt and University Honors Program has a line after signature that says Major: Music Theatre. Adding: Sorry, I see you didn’t get letter yet. Our email came four days before the letter. Who is the email from? That might be a clue.

@sopranomtmom My D’s email was the same. I didn’t question it, since it said the conservatory, but it says to reply if you have questions. I’m also curious about class size. Do you have any idea?

@freddiegirl Last year’s MT class looks like it was about 24-26.

@Spike27 i don’t see any line like that but this is an email not a letter so perhaps that comes later? My D is so cautious these days about not assuming anything poor girl. This process is so confusing that you are afraid to celebrate prematurely!!

@also830 My S chucked his CMU audition the night before. We were going to be in Pittsburgh anyway for a non college audition and we knew that would be all day. The CMU one was the next day. He was tired and dealing with a sinus issue. He had a CLEAR first choice and a few others with big $$$. I wanted him to do it because its CMU and who passes that up??? He did and he has no regret.

@ALS0830 we are in same situation, was thinking of bagging Montclair audition tomorrow …SO tempted. But… if D got an offer there (which blah blah we all know slim possibility but could happen ) she would def be interested . So… off we go. …
