Well we’re on the quarter system here. One more week til we say goodbye…
@stagedoormama I know. 15 seemed light to me too. She transferred in 24 credits so that helps. But this is probably the only semester she can get away with 15 credits. She’s actually taking 7 courses - six 2 credit ones and one 3 credit course (her only gen ed - Psychology). Nearly all of her BFA courses are 2 credits, but the work load that each entails is a lot. Juggling the logistics of seven classes is keeping her busy enough!
@efr9598 What is the quarter system? I’ve heard of tri-mesters, but not quarters. Which school is that? (If you don’t mind my asking.)
Most of California’s UC schools are on the quarter systems 4 times a year.
My D also has 15 hrs. Her advisor didn’t seem concerned by it. She has 21 hrs going into fall semester so that’s cool
Techson17 is taking 17.5 credits this semester and went in with 9 gen ed AP credits. Most of the other kids are taking 14.5. He has 11.5 credits in his major (BFA tech theater and production) and 2 gen ed classes. I am a little nervous because he’s dyslexic and has never been a particularly motivated academic student. However, his two gen ed classes are in areas of interest (science and law/history) in which he has traditionally done better in than classes like English and math and he tells me he is studying more than he ever did.
@daughtersdreams he’s headed to Northwestern. Most kids enroll for 3 of 4 quarters but there is a full summer quarter as well. He’ll be taking four classes.
S home for a Labor Day quickie- 17 credit hours plus a supporting role in a fall play (!) plus 30 hours to work crew behind scenes for mainstage productions! Bonus: Honors course in History at SEMO is an enjoyable challenge. verdict: so far, so good!
As the parent of someone who just graduated, I would recommend that you look into options for taking a class or two in the summer, and/or by correspondence. There is an additional cost to do so, but it does allow you to free up your schedule a little bit during the school year. MT curriculum is very time consuming as is being in shows (rehearsals, etc…) You also may want to have some flexibility your senior year Spring semester (or before) to go to some auditions away from school. (UPTAs, SETC, Strawhats, etc…) Easier to manage with a lighter course load.
I agree with @vvnstar. Techson17 is planning on doing his math gen ed at our local CC next summer and perhaps his foreign language as well. I am willing to pay for it because, with his dyslexia and dyscalculia, neither subjects has ;ever been positive for him and if he takes them over the summer and gets a C, the credits count but he doesn’t get a hit on his GPA. This could also free him up to take some additional electives in his major or pursue a minor.
We’re very excited our D had two call backs for the lead and one for a supporting role in the Fall drama at LMU. She also had a call back for the musical. She did not end up getting a part in the drama but she was cast in the musical!
@marg928 -
Congrats to your D. What is the show?
@techmom99 it’s called Runaways by Elizabeth Swados
Amazing show.
@marg928 Congratulations to your D! Hopefully her agent will understand that she has to put this commitment first. Best of Luck to her!
Well she found out she gets three credits for being in the show lol!
@marg928 it’s awesome to get credit for being in the show!
18.5 credits at BoCo for my S’s first semester. 14 classes and I believe (ugh) 15 finals. Makes me think kids going to Harvard must be slackers. I think I counted about 27 hours of class time. Weekends are filled with homework catch up and Thursdays do not include a lunch break as classes go straight through from 9am to 5:30pm.
^^wow. It is amazing what our kids do for their passion!
@MomofMTBoy 14 classes? How is that even possible? Six classes usually equals 18 credits I’m very confused :((
