@momma2a Congratulations to your D (and to you)! It’s so nice to have that decision made. I hope it’s exactly what she wants and more.
Congratulations, @momma2a !!! How wonderful that she found her “perfect fit” so early AND was accepted! Now you can both kick back and relax and enjoy the rest of the year without stress!
thanks @bfahopeful @stagedoormama and @MTmom70. I think we’re way past the point of playbill…the list has been whittled down from 45 schools to about 25 but none were in the Northwest. All of a sudden my D has this urge to be in Washington or Oregon even though we have never set foot in either of those states! I think she’s just stressed and second guessing the whole BFA thing. She loves beautiful landscapes, mountains, ocean etc and is always looking at pictures on Instagram from that part of the country. Up until now it’s been all about California for her. Cornish just got added to our list but I think she needs more of a campus feel. Then she starts talking about majoring in history or anthropology and just taking acting classes on her own…she’s killing me. But, of course I want her to be happy but at this point I told her to get her apps in and do her auditions and keep her options open. I truly know nothing about the Northwest so any info helps. We are from New Jersey…
@bfahopeful - Knew I was going to forget one, and we even have a friend in the program at Western! HA!
For what it’s worth, Southern Oregon University is affiliated with Oregon Shakespeare Festival and its students often go on to intern there. I don’t know anything more about it, but it might be worth investigating.
^Yup. That is a big draw for some people.
Congrats @momma2a and D! You have a thrilled D AND you/she get to enjoy her senior year. How cool is that!?
@MTmom70 We too used MCA for our D and had the advantage of going into Boston for lessons it was worth the money spent. Our D passed all Prescreens so far and we have applied to 14 BFA Programs. Our D has a MCA masterclass weekend coming up in Dec which will prepare her for Unified its an exciting time but long process. Congrats to your S!
@momm2a Congrats to you and your D. Sounds like you picked an awesome safety, which is huge.
Has anyone heard back from Ithaca on their prescreen?
We heard last night. It was a yes!
Musicmama123 and Marg928…when did you submit prescreens for Ithaca? My S has been waiting about 6 weeks already.
We heard in just over a week. I would call!
Help! Decided at last minute to apply to NY U. D had to leave for rehearsal so I said I would pay and hit send on the portfolio “audition” part as the app was sent. Confirmation came back I had accidentally hit " acting -early decision " instead of musical theatre -regular decision! Do I call them? Just fill out another one and pay twice? Hoping I can fix this before D finds out.
@nodaybut2daymom my D’s Ithaca prescreen was submitted 11/8. I emailed them on 11/23 asking when we would hear and they got back to me yesterday saying that the faculty members are in the process of reviewing pre-screens and that it’s a very busy time but we should hear soon. They also gave me the schedule for Unifieds and I was surprised to see they require a big chunk of time…9-1:30 or 1:30-6. Meanwhile FSU said it would only take 15 minutes!
@musicmama123 I’m glad I’m not the only one who screwed up along the line! No joke that’s a big mistake…you need to call admissions asap tomorrow!
ok this is a bit of topic but it can be considered “ranting” so I’m posting it here. Plus I can’t think of a better group to run this one by. As I’ve mentioned my D has only done one school show which was our spring musical for 2016 American Idiot. She is never able to do the fall dramas since she is a Varsity cheerleader and the practices conflict. The years before that she always had dance competitions so never bothered trying out. She was really looking forward to doing the musical this year. Around June the director announced that they would be putting on Legally Blonde. Many people approached my D and myself saying the show was picked with her in mind to play Elle Woods. I was kind of taken aback by those comments but whatever…she would audition and see what happened. So anyway, last week out of nowhere, a week before auditions, the teacher/director decides that he’s going to do The Producers instead! Our fall drama was a couple of weeks ago and it was a male dominated comedy (The Government Inspector) and he was so inspired by it that he wanted to do a male comedy musical! Basically there is only one female solo song in the whole show and it’s completely sexist! Look up the lyrics to “When You Got It Flaunt It”…one of the lines is “show the boys your birthday suit”! All the girls who intended to try out are so upset about this. I’m pretty annoyed myself! Even the chorus teacher is unhappy about it but she basically told the girls that if they complain they won’t get a part in the show so don’t say anything. So my question is…in your experience is this typical and do you think it’s appropriate for a high school girl to be playing a part like that? Out of principal I don’t want her to but I’m far from a prude…It’s more the point of leaving the girls out that upset me.
@marg928 … brutal honesty: High school theatre sucks and I wouldn’t get worked up over it at all.
I wouldn’t be offended by it either … though it takes a lot to offend me. (Hell, in Grease, they smoke, drink, Rizzo thinks she’s pregnant, they talk about girls being on their knees, condoms - and the moral of the story is, to get a guy, you need to look like a whore. But that’s done at high schools across the country all the time.)
@marg928 - ditto what @KaMaMom said - HS theatre sucks. As the mom of a now Senior in college (I promise, it feels like we were just where all of you are!), high school is a very distant memory. While my D got good parts in the musicals, she was not cast in the fall play her senior year. The teacher had favorites, and she wasn’t one of them! I think that is very common. It seemed awful at the time, but it’s such a small blip now! And she just found out today that she’s one of the leads in her final show in college. This show will be on her resume, but those high school shows won’t!
I’m not offended by the show, but totally understand being upset about leaving the girls out. There are ALWAYS more girls than boys, so doing male dominated shows is hard on those girls.
@marg928 - my D played Sally Bowles in Cabaret in HS- abortion and all…
One can only assume that a high school would “tone down” some of the racier elements of The Producers (along came Bialy :-SS ) but then again, who knows?
