Class of 2021 Waitlist

Seems crazy that no one has gotten a call this week, but in looking at other waitlist threads it looks like a crazy year…

@Chembiodad Yeah, I’m on a few other waitlists and everything seems different from the past few years (based on reading old threads)!

@Swillow1022, agree, so even more important this year that everyone already deposited at an RD acceptance school that they’ll be happy at

For anyone who got the call that they were accepted - was the number that called the same as the admissions office phone number? And did it say Middletown, CT? I’ve been getting some random (probably accidental) calls from in state recently and haven’t been picking them up because they aren’t from Middletown, but I’m a little paranoid now. I know the chances are tiny, so if it does happen I don’t want to miss it by not realizing it’s them!

I checked the waitlist FAQ carefully and it said “Do not send any additional art materials.”, and they didn’t mention anything about additional recommendations (while Williams did explicitly state that they do not need any additional recommendation letters).
I also googled for advises for getting off college waitlists, and I think I saw one of the articles mentioning how sending an LOR might help at Wes, so I sent one in anyways. I didn’t get to look at the LOR but I asked my teacher to send it to their email directly, and she didn’t say anything else except that she had already sent it.

The waitlist call was from Middletown, and I think they called from the admissions office, because the phone number was quite similar to the AO’s official number.
I also received a couple of calls from Connecticut before and after being admitted, but they were all student loan ads.

I actually think the LOR somewhat helped, but I really don’t know since my teacher only told me she sent it to them.

@justanotherdreamer
For my EC’s:
Tennis (not in any teams but played almost every day)
Traditional instrument (performed at school events, sent in recordings for the art supplement)
Volunteered at several cultural events (translated and introduced stuff)
Actively involved in HS’s International Club (did performances, planned and hosted events, did fundraising, etc.)
Never held any leadership positions.
The interview from January lasted for an hour and my interviewer asked me a couple nontraditional questions.

@hcwcaz Thanks for the info! Congrats on getting in, you deserve it.

I said that about the LOR because this is what it said on the FAQ:

“Can I send supplementary material? You may send an email describing your interest in attending Wesleyan to applicant@wesleyan.edu. We also welcome additional academic updates such as recent grades sent from your school. Do not send any additional art materials.”

From my understanding it seemed like they were saying “What you CAN send is a LOCI and updated grades”.

Also, from one of the other questions:

“Is there anything I can do to increase my chances of being admitted? Not really. Aside from the letter indicating the strength of your interest (mentioned in #4), you have already made your best case. Since we will be carefully monitoring your academic performance, our advice is to work hard and do your absolute best in school.”

All of this made it seem like the only things they accepted were the LOCI and latest grades. (As a side note, when they say “we will be carefully monitoring your academic performance”, what exactly does that mean? They can’t see our grades unless we personally send them through our school, right?) Maybe I was reading too much into it, but that was the impression I got (along with other people I know who were waitlisted). If we actually were able to send in a new LOR, I’m going to be pretty annoyed. :frowning:

@justanotherdreamer, unfortunately I don’t think everyone plays by the rules as I saw on another thread that the student’s dean of the school and guidance counselor called the college, and next thing they got off the waitlist.

@justanotherdreamer Thanks! And I don’t think they can see your grades before your HS sends in the final report, which will be in June.
Getting off the waitlist is largely by chance, but I think you want to be as pro-active as possible and do everything you can (just don’t flood them).
I interpreted their FAQ the complete opposite way. As long as they DIDN’T forbid you from sending an LOR I am assuming it wouldn’t hurt to send it, so… Also, since it’s an LOR from an academic class it still counts as an academic update, right? (I did that b/c I simply didn’t want to send them my grades b/c I wasn’t getting straight A’s)
Just FYI: I found another international student admitted off the waitlist, and she said she received her call on May 10th.

@justanotherdreamer Saying “I don’t want blue T-shirts” is different from “I’m prefer yellow and red T-shirts”.

My interpretations:
“We also welcome additional academic updates such as recent grades sent from your school.”
SUCH AS. They said SUCH AS.
Me: Recent grades are examples of academic updates. I’ll send sth. in that falls under that category. Recommendations work at other schools and won’t work at Williams (they typed out “no additional LOR needed”). Okay, guess I’ll send one in.

“Do not send any additional art materials.”
ART MATERIALS INCLUDE (from my POV)
brownies/cookies/cakes that spelled “Wesleyan” in any form
a song about your passion for Wesleyan that you composed during spring break
paintings related to Wes sent in digital form
Hmmm… Written words can be form of art, but I don’t think they’ll count as art materials in this context. I’ll just go ask my teacher for an LOR.

“We will be carefully monitoring your academic performance”
Didn’t get straight A’s so I’ll send them sth else to show that I’m working hard. My teacher knows what I’m doing in class, I can ask her for some help, especially when she told she had written LOR for some waitlisted seniors before.

Hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck. P.S. Always remember Wesleyan accepts transfer students :x @justanotherdreamer

Anyone hearing anything about more movement on the waitlist or when they expect to close it out?

Just for informational purposes, I just got a call and got off the waitlist to Wesleyan. I did not send any updated information or letters, but I did not accept because I decided that I am happy with my choice to attend Bowdoin, so I took my name off. Good luck to everyone!

@Dorothy28, good news and congrats on Bowdoin! Did they only call or was just the way you asked them to reach out to you?

@Chembiodad I’m not sure a hundred percent what you mean, but I never contacted them at all. They called me and I saw “Middletown, CT.” They asked for a verbal commitment and said I had a week to respond.

Was wondering why they wouldn’t have sent you an email as well given it’s a big decision - my gosh what if you hadn’t seen the phone number…

@Dorothy28 Did you get the call today?

I did not receive any kind of email at all. I was surprised too because I did receive an email from Swarthmore last night about the waitlist, saying that I should let them know if I really want it or if I don’t as soon as possible. I got the call from Wesleyan around 4:00 pm EST tonight.

@Dorothy28 just curious what your stats are? What area are you from and do you think there was anything that made you stand out?
