Has anyone heard from Penn State’s December auditions?
It took two emails from my D and a phone call from me (which was not returned), but Shenandoah finally updated my D’s portal to show everything as received… so if anyone out there is having the same issue, I suggest calling them…
Does anyone know if Rider has a dance call at Chicago unifieds? We are reserving an afternoon slot for them since I don’t know exactly what time our audition is but I’m not even sure if there’s a separate dance call now? I am hoping and praying it’s the same afternoon as the vocal portion since the rest of our schedule is really filling up!
@savedrama4momma Have they not told you about that? Seems remiss not to give more audition details
@savedrama4momma the Rider website indicates a ballet/jazz combination with an optional tap call. Interesting that they have not told you the time!
@artskids all they told us is the day of the week and it will be after noon- so My D blocked off the whole afternoon. Did anyone get a specific time already? I may have to call them to just make sure I’m not missing anything.
I realize it’s probavly a different set up for Chicago, but my D has an on campus audition for Rider and they said they would notify her of the times two weeks prior…
@savedrama4momma I don’t know if it has changed but a few years ago at NY Unifieds, Rider taught an 8-count (yes, 8 counts!) ballet “routine.” and then cut almost everyone. The “optional” tap call was at their option not the student’s. My D was so insulted by this BS dance call. She is an advanced tapper and never got to dance. She came out and said there was no way she was going there. Perhaps the on-campus auditions have a longer dance call?
Manhattan School of Music-applied for BFA in Musical Theatre. They are askng for a Repertoire Studied document. I thought for sure that this was only for Voice and Instrument Majors. But I called the MT Dept today and she said they wanted one from MT applicants too. I don’t quite know how to do this…Shows, roles and training are on resume. I suppose she could put down arias sung for NYSSMA? i don’t know-very confused. Anyone done this before for MT?
@fancytheatrekid S had to do this for FSU-BM theatre. He just put a mix of musical theatre and classical songs that he has previously performed or learned and felt comfortable singing on the spot if asked. Not sure if that was the right thing to do, but he listed about 22 songs. Most were songs from shows already on his resume. Hope that helps!
Thanks @PaMTmom Anyone else, please chime in!
@fancytheatrekid and@PaMTmom - well, now I’ve heard everything…just when I thought this process couldn’t get more insane, here it is- a Repertoire Studied document. WTH. Although I’m not sure why I’m surprised. It won’t be long before the others fall into line. My heart goes out to the Class of 2022 hopefuls!
And there are schools that want students to list ALL productions in which they have been involved. ALL. 8-|
Sure – your ballet recital at the age of 3 is such a critical indicator of success in the MT major. Somebody start passing the wine – y’all are going to need it!!
After using this site a bit last year, just came back to see how things are going for this year’s class. A few thoughts…
Check out Indiana University for their MT program. It’s pretty phenomenal. Driector is very tied in to Broadway. And Broadway comes to IU. As to agents. Master class this fall with Glenn Close. Workshopped a new show with musical director of Great Comet. So much happening.
For singers…check out great American songbook academy. Weeklong summer intensive for 40 kids nationallly. Incredible exposure and one on one time with people in the industry. Found it even more valuable than Open Jar.
Good luck. And let them run the show!!
@EastchesterMom - my D had to do the ALL productions thing for her Syracuse app 4 years ago (we made a special resume for them)… I remember it actually made her fell pretty good to list EVERYTHING out and see “I really have spent a bunch of time on stage”.
@EastchesterMom I believe my S had to create a similar resume for UM. This is the first I have heard about a Repertoire Studied document. I’m so happy my S has all applications and prescreens submitted and his first acceptance, otherwise I would be going insane.
Repertoire lists are typically required by Vocal Performance programs, rarely by MT programs. The only schools that I have seen require them are BM programs, such as FSU (BM MT), Belmont, Manhattan School of Music, etc. I wouldn’t worry about this becoming a typical requirement in the future for MT BFA programs.
Now that I think about it, my D did all her apps by herself 4 years ago… for all I know, she had to do the ALL thing, too. BTW, congrats on the acceptance, @mommafaria! Has someone started an acceptance thread?
@EmsDad is right! Rep lists are standard procedure in Vocal Performance programs; but of course those kiddos don’t have to do dance calls and monologues, as well! We keep a Repertoire List updated in the same font/layout as my D’s Resume, and structure it by genre and then by newest to oldest. Adding asterisks, etc., to denote “memorized” and/or “performed” is also helpful.
