I received an email this morning telling me that I’m a potential recipient for the SDSU Merit Scholarship, which covers the cost of tuition and fees for all four years. Anyone know any more information about this besides the few sentences on the website?
This is an exclusive opportunity available only to a very select number of SDSU applicants graduating from local high schools with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 4.0 and at least a 33 ACT composite score or a 1460 SAT (evidence-based reading and writing and math) score.
One of my kids received this scholarship when it was first started in 2013. He kept it all four years at SDSU, and turned down some highly selective universities to attend State. Opened lots of doors for him, specifically with connecting him with professors and staff in his area of study. One particular professor saw his potential and worked with him in everything from selecting courses to adding him to his research team his sophomore year. He networked with donors and alumni at events, went to the president’s house for dinner a few times, etc. The scholarship helped a ton, and he worked in the dorms for three years to help cover his living expenses. Graduated in four years without any debt, and greatly enjoyed his undergrad years. He’s graduating with his masters this spring, and then hopefully onto a PhD program.
My D received it last year. She’s a current freshman nursing student. At orientation the provost said the school had 18 merit scholars this year. She has tuition and fees paid by school and it’s renewable by meeting minimum requirements. I think those requirements include 30 units completed per year with 3.5 GPA. Also she decided late she wanted to do Honors and they put her in the program without asking her to complete a separate application. Last year there was merit scholar brunch at Montezuma Hall in late January where invited students could hear success stories from current scholars and faculty before doing a private campus tour. Many of the speakers shared their stories about declining more prestigious schools for the opportunities at SDSU. Congratulations!
