Is anyone willing to share what they’ve learned regarding the audition format for their MT kiddo? I understand that everything is fluid, but some things are starting to firm up as far as live auditions vs virtual. I am also wondering how many more times I will need to rent the dance studio to tape a dance portion. insert sigh I am adding information from virtual visits, website, or Acceptd. Only the ones marked “Confirmed” I am sure about.
With all the “new crazy” of this already crazy process, I am comforted by the knowledge the Class of 2025 will have a heck of a story to tell (as will their parents)!
Elon: Virtual Interview / Must submit self-tape dance piece provided by the school (Confirmed - Acceptd)
My girl is an MT musician. FYI Tip: Zoom has a new feature titled “high fidelity music mode”. You should use it! It will keep Zoom’s automated sound compressor from messing with the dynamics of the music you are singing or dancing to while auditioning virtually. You won’t notice any difference on your end, but it sounds much more professional and less distracting on the school’s end of the call.
THANK YOU @Tinman21! This is my biggest fear for S that the quality of his voice won’t come through! Good luck to your girl if she is going through this process.
@E2L1DC - can’t remember if you have, but be sure to get a good mic, like the Blue Yeti (the $129 version). It does a great job with the sound – much better than laptop mic! Cardiod is the preferred setting for vocals, but experiment with that and Stereo.
@E2L1DC yes, she is auditioning for MT direction or accompaniment at the few programs that exist. We have a Blue Snowball, but the music mode adjustment is key as Zoom will otherwise compress and distort whatever great sound the mic picks up. It’s just one more step that makes them sound polished and professional.
A lot more taping of dances for callbacks than I would have expected too! Miami, Syracuse, Penn State, Wright State - Can confirm those all have additional dances to tape. Have read on website that Texas State will also have an additional dance to record.
@xena11 I was just coming in to say Syracuse is confirmed via email. They are requiring that everything needs to be retaped in addition to the dance. You can use 1 of the same songs or monologues but it can not be the same clip you previously sent in.
Sunnyside to [this] situation: Each studio rental/taping basically equals 1 day of a hotel & food & mileage. . .
@iowamtmom - I have no idea! I was prepared for retaping the dance part, hoping he would get all of his acceptance/rejections soon so he could do it all in one day. No such luck as one is due in the next couple of weeks and the other is a longer routine and not due until Dec.
Perhaps they are mimicking what would happen at a live audition - they would be asked to perform a different monologue/song? Whatever the reason, S took it well, I went and checked the wine cabinet. . .he’s not responsible for the spreadsheets. LOL
American University - Virtual Auditions 2/13 & 2/14 / 30 mins timeslots
Oklahoma City - Website is updated. Video requirements are similar to the prescreens with the exception of they provide the dance routine and want a classical (non-musical theatre) song.
Western Carolina - Virtual Audition/Interview. Must submit self-tape dance piece provided by the school. It includes a musical theatre dance section and 2 ballet combinations. (Confirmed by email)
Schools we know of so far on my sons list that have sent or will be sending along a dance link for final audition/callback if he gets passed first round.
Elon, Texas State, Baldwin Wallace, NYU, Syracuse, UMich
Carnegie Mellon, Ithaca and Pace no need for another dance-prescreen dances suffice.
Checking on Montclair, Point park, George Mason, Hartt, Otterbein & Alabama(Tuscaloosa) now to see what they would require at “call back”. If anyone already knows, please pass along! Ty!
(As of today he has passed prescreens at Carnegie Mellon, Syracuse and Pace-notified through Accepted within a couple weeks).
FSU has a dance callback that must be taped. They will send it out closer to the interview date. There is also a welcome, Q&A session that parents can join prior to the start of the interview blocks.
