My school has tons of grade inflation and therefore, 20+ ppl out of ~335 have 4.0 GPAs Unweighted. I have only 1 B and that means my UW rank will not be in the top 5%. However, my weighted rank will be in the top 2% of my class. I know that my school reports both the weighed and unweighted ranks to colleges. My question is how much of a detriment my UW rank is to top schools (HYPMS). Will they only look at the UW rank? (that's what I've heard). So basically, I'm wondering if my weighted rank can help equal-out my UW rank.

At HYPSM, most unhooked applicants are val or sal. Even at mid tier ivies unless they attend exceptional high schools.

hmom: just wondering, what do you define as “exceptional” high schools? I sort of have the same problem, I’m ranked 10/484 unweighted but definitely top 5 or even top 3 weighted. like the majority of kids in America… I don’t go to an amazing, elite, awesome private school, but a fairly competitive public school (2nd in state). so does that count as “excpetional”?

@ OP: If there is such heavy grade inflation, why haven’t you gotten straight As? HYPSM etc. are looking for the most competitive applicants from each school. That’s just the way it is.

Exceptional high school=average SAT score above 2000, selective magnet, sends 10% plus to ivies…

Elite HS=SAT close to 2100, 25% plus to ivies…

Is it actually grade deflation or a super high performing school?

My school has 500+ graduating seniors with 25+ valedictorians. Actually some of the super brilliant students take more APs and get occassional B’s in subjects they don’t like that much, so they are not even valedictorians. School doesn’t weight GPA. Good news is that the school stopped ranking just recently.

I think the school sends 25% plus to Ivies + Stanford + MIT +
Cal Tech + Chicago + Northwestern + Berkeley + LA + USC
