Upon looking at its web site, I have discovered that I hold some deeply-held misconceptions about the UCAL system. So Berkeley doesn’t look at class rank or recommendations at all? They won’t even take a transcript or a recom. from a prof. at another university? And *** is that grading system they’re using? They apparently believe that an A in sophomore English Honors requires the same amount of work as an A in regular sophomore English, which is wrong on so many levels, at least in my school. It seems a little ludicrous that UCB has to use the same mundane admissions system as the rest of the UCAL schools. I’d hate to think I busted my a** to beat out my fellow classmates and sucked up to my chem. teacher for nothing.

Class rank does matter if you're in California. High schools file official transcripts with UC for the top 12.5% of the graduating class. Your success is evaluated in a relative manner within your academic setting. It's called comprehensive review and it explains why certain Hispanics and African Americans get in with 3.5s GPAs...they have succeded as much as their environment has allowed them to.

"sucked up to my chem. teacher for nothing."

You shouldn't have done that in the first place. If you weren't interested enough to talk to him about chemistry, you really shouldn't have. Don't lower yourself for trivialities.

Umm, ELC admittance rate: 61%, shows that class rank and GPA mean alot at UCB.

the point of getting a good rank is to get ELC status.

Lyrical: could you please give me your source for the 61% ELC admittance rate at Berkeley?

Look at the column on the right hand side.

UCAL. UC damnit. Screw you out of staters. Cal beats the crap out of any other state school. Hell, even UCLA and UCSD beats teh crap out of your state schools, so shut up ok.

ELC means nothing. My 4.35 at one of the most competetive schools in the US puts me at the top 1% or something out of the other high schools. I didn't get ELC. I was FAR froom ELC. You needed like a 4.5 to have ELC at my school. I was ranked like 80 or something out of 500 even with a 4.35. And the schools I got into? Let's not even start bragging.

Whatever dude. I know idiots who get into GT and Washington or UT Austin. They're great schools but they don't take much to get into. Getting into Cal is hard. IF you're out of state, its like getting into Ivy League. So stop dissing Cal.

If you think our admissions process sucks, go to StanFUrd then. I'm sure they have a more comprehensive admissions process. I hauled @$$ for their app ok. I wrote so much for their package, it was my best essay package ever. Whatever dude.

Yeah. **** stanford. last time i checked, they weren't number 2 in the world (nor #1)

its included in the UC's annual brochure.

and actually elc admit rate is even lower for ucla than ucb

i know how you feel, since ELC is based on your school's competitiveness.

just tough luck if you go to a school full of really ambitious and intelligent people..

My 4.4 GPA kept me out of ELC at my high school.

Dumbass out-of-staters.

What is ELC? Does it even apply to out-of-staters?

no it does not to my knowledge, asiaknight, it stands for Eligibility in the Local Context, which means you must qualify as top 4% in your California High School...I qualified ELC, which guaranteed me admission to UC Irvine, and I got into UCLA and Berkeley. It is based on the competitiveness of your senior class, which why people like Kratos would have prolly gotten ELC at my school but not at their own.

UCAL Berkeley
UCAL LA
UCAL San Diego
UCAL Davis
UCAL Irvine
UCAL Santa Barbara
UCAL Riverside
....

.
UCAL

sorry, if you check the common data set, class rank is NOT used at all in the process bcos ~50% of Calif HS do not report school rank. The elc apps, which are self-reported (some kids at our HS last year chose not to participate), already have great grades so they already have a higher chance of admission.

Recs are not wanted since 99.9% of the time, they say the kid walks on water.

ELC is useless...

UC Berkeley
UC LA
UC San Diego
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara
UC Riverside
UC Merced

Riverside owns Santa Cruz in engineering. It owns in med too cuz its med school = UCLA med school. Just depends how you look at it. Santa Cruz has marine bio and stuff which only a few schools do. I mean *** you have to be on the coast to begin with so why would other schools like Davis have that. So yea.
