If you go to a highly competitive magnet school with like 800 students per grade, it's extraordinarily difficult to get ranks like top 10%. The school knows this and doesn't report rank, but they do have it calculated and I'm in the bottom half (even though my GPA is still relatively decent by most peoples standards). Should I assume colleges know how competitive the school is and not worry about my class rank?

Yea I go to a pretty damn competitive magnet school with 60 kids per grade, 250 whole school. We do not send a rank to colleges, but you can ask for your class rank and it is not easy to get ranked highly due to the competition. I am sure that colleges know this, either from past applicants or your counselor.

College admissions people are aware of how academically competitive schools are. If you are applying far away or to a school where kids from your school have not applied, the school also sends what is called a profile, which explains a lot of things about your school.

My private school in Brooklyn has about 500 people in it, and about 130 or so in my grade. As of June 2011 I’m #63, but my GPA has gone down and the new ranks aren’t out yet, so I’m scared that I’m not going to be in the top half anymore. Hopefully I still am because the rank is on our transcript.

IMO, rank is notas relevant in a school that has competitive admission. In theory, a college prep school is going to have better students to start. In a non-magnet public school, everybody is included n the rank, including students who get services. Don’t flame my comments; they are generalizations.
