How heavily does Emory weight class rank, compared to course rigor, GPA, SAT/ACT, and SAT II’s? How bad does a 4th decile class rank look? Obviously other factors are important as well, but how much will it hurt me? Thank You!

Under the Admission tab, you will see Emory rates class rank as far less important than high school grades and less important than standardized test scores and course rigor.
By 4th decile, you mean you rank in the top 40% in your class? 96% of the freshman class ranked in the top 25% of their high school class.
Yes, top 40%. I have a 3.57UW, 4.25 Weighted; School is extremely competitive, I had a rough freshman year; I have a 33 ACT and solid ECs (look at chance me post for more details) @BiffBrown
Would my other parts of application overlook that? Thank You!
I’m also doing ED
@Bolsted101 It’s been stated by knowledgeable posters on this board that Emory computes an unweighted GPA for applicants based on academic courses only (excluding things like PE, for example). This makes it easier to compare applicants’ GPAs.
Here’s a recent thread where that’s explained:

I don’t know how Emory deals with applicants who have a very poor freshman year GPA.
Technical questions of that nature are best addressed to someone in the know in the admissions office.
Your GPA will be low at both the Oxford and Emory campuses, though the Emory campus historically has admitted applicants that in the aggregate have higher GPAs.
ED1 helps. It would also help if there were a reason for the poor freshman year performance and if you drastically improved after that. For example, did you come from a background that would make it difficult to adjust to a very competitive high school?
At an Emory information session, I learned that Emory doesn’t count first year grades, if that helps
@kuustarr Do you mean that Emory computes GPA by excluding all grades from 9th grade?
Does Emory also exclude non-academic subjects?
@BiffBrown I was told at the session that freshman grades were not included in GPA calculation. However, it is not on their website. I would call an undergraduate admissions officer @Bolsted101 for confirmation. I found a thread on here earlier with conflicting information (but a then-freshman at Oxford did attest to my claim) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/emory-university/1839797-how-to-calculate-gpa-for-emory.html
also @BiffBrown not sure about that part. I know that they look at course rigor, so I’m guessing non-academic subjects are still considered, if they’re difficult or not.
@kuustarr : I wouldn’t buy anything about them claiming they completely exclude freshman grades (could be to encourage more applications via hope). They probably more so mildly overlook them in the case of excellence elsewhere and for the remainder of HS. Avoid taking certain things face value on the college admissions tours unless it is actually on their websites. Their job is to woo more applicants and recruit them.
Also, generally class rank and how it is viewed will depend on the school and/or if there is a history of students from said HS actually being sent to Emory (not just being admitted, but ones who matriculated).
We also were told in an information session that Emory does not put much weight on freshman grades. I can’t say they will disregard them altogether, but if your soph and junior grades are good, I wouldn’t be too worried about freshman grades.
Carnegie Mellon also claims not to consider freshman year grades.

My son is currently a freshman - we were told that Emory admissions computes your GPA based on “academic subjects” so things like music, PE, etc. are excluded to give a better indication of a student’s ability at Emory.
