Zotstart has me confused beyond all possible belief...as do other things on the UCI website. -___-

Anyone have any suggestions for classes to take the fall quarter?

I'm thinking of taking 3-4 classes depending on this one program I'm signing up for at SPOP, and also getting started on some research if that's possible. Would research and classes be too much? Or does it depend on time management?

What’s confusing you? You don’t need to worry about signing up for classes until SPOP. They’ll have an advising session there for you.

If you want to investigate what classes are required for your major by yourself, visit the course catalogue for the School of Biological Sciences:

You have to take safety and ethics before you are allowed to do research. Bio 194S. As a bio major, you really just take bio core, chemistry, GEs or basic physics for 2 years. You don’t really get to “choose” anything besides your GE’s because classes go in order.

@sndebrosse: Thanks for the links. The confusion came from trying to figure out a way to balance the major reqs along with the GEs. How much would be too much in your opinion?

@Zairair: Do you know when I can take Bio194S? I really want to start doing research as soon as possible. :)

Bio194S is usually offered every quarter but I’m not sure, if its offered this Fall quarter. It consists of reading alot of online lab manuals, and taking quizzes on your own pace. Its a P/NP and you need to attend two mandatory lectures out of the ten weeks.

As for your fall classes, your academic advisors at SPOP will help you aid what classes to take for your Freshmen academic year and so on… so dont fret about it so much. There are also other freshmans who are just as worried as you as to what classes we need to take.

Since your a bio a major, there is two mandatory classes to take for the fall:
Bio 93 and Chem 1A
You dont partake any lab yet this quarter.
For your third class, I highly recommend take a writing class, 39A (if you didnt pass the AP or the AWPE), 39B, or Hum Core series(Note: this class is recommended to really good writers, its a tough class for the academic year but it fills alot of GEs and saves time)

Highly recommend you finish your lower division writing requirement ASAP before finishing your 1st year because writing comsumes a lot of your time. Theres something big coming along in your sophmore year and you’ll need all the time to study.

So in summary take, Bio 93, Chem 1A, and Writing.

You can take a fourth class, like a GE (a super easy one)

It is recommended to take Calculus (Math 2A-B) if you haven’t completed those yet. But taking those four classes is definitely a tough courseload for incoming freshmen.

Thats too much for a freshman fall quarter imo. It’s definitely up to you, and you know yourself best.

You can always drop within the first week or two to see how you will handle things. But its generally not too great of an idea to fall behind in taking those core classes.

You will have no social life, assuming you want a good grade in these respective classes.

Any schedule is “ok” relative to the kind of person you are. I know a girl who does >20 every quarter since she got here and she’s still near 4.0 as a bio major.

@ceepeace
So taking humcore count as 8 units i believe, so that makes 16 units, I’m sure its enough, since I’ve heard many people says hum core consumes alot of your time. As well keeping busy with bio and chem readings.

Quick tip: I highly suggest avoiding taking Janda for Chem 1A if he is considered to take teach in the fall, unless you’ve taken AP Chem or you understand reading the book really well. He will blow your mind into confusion if you did or didnt read the book. If you want to learn from a lecture, find someone else. :P

hey im taking chem1a, bio93, math2b, writing 39b is that okay?
or should i take bio93, math2b, writing 39b, and FYIP …i think fyip takes some ge’s away but im not sure…
thanks for the help!
oh also is it better to finish off ge’s quickly, or spread em throughout the yrs…thanks!

I finished my GE’s last quarter and I’m just coasting the next 2 years with 12-14 units/quarter. It’s a very nice luxury for me to pursue other goals.
