Class requests: schedules, etc

Would any current students be willing to give some advice about schedules, course requests, etc?

Also, I was wondering if Pomona does sophomore standing, and if so, what tests/grades are necessary to qualify and does sophomore standing provide a stronger chance to get desired classes?

hey, you can only bring in 2 credits from ap classes in high school, so obviously that doesn;t qualify you for sophomore standing. i'd be happy to answer any specific questions about classes or whatever, but its sort of hard to give you a general answer. you don't register for classes until you get on campus in the fall, but before you come out you'll be able to look online at the pomona web portal and see what classes are open, get an idea of which ones you might want to take, etc.

First-year students actually have a pretty good shot at getting into some good classes. D is taking astronomy second semester, something that most students don't get to take until sophomore year.

i didn't mean to sound like first-years can;t get into good classes, just in case you got that impression. i just meant freshmen get last priority in terms of registration. some classes, like...pretty much all of martha andresen's, have no first-years bc they fill up on the first day of registration (and she's retiring this year, ::tear::). i'm taking paleontology this semester which was full according to the web portal but i got the prof's signature, so don't stress out. i think it all works out in the end.

Thus if freshmen are essentially the last in line to sign up for courses, is there anyway for freshmen to get some degree of priority?

Maybe I phrased it incorrectly as sophomore standing, but would taking classes at UCSB, the local city college, and AP credits qualify for priority in schedule requests?

your registration time is random, so there's no way to "get ahead" of other freshmen. rising seniors, juniors, and sophomores register for the fall semester in a few weeks, but freshmen wait until they get on the campus in the fall. within each class, though, it's just random.
