i think someone on this board recently called ucsd and asked if we pick classes at orientation. Apparently they will assign slots to us to pick classes in August. Then, someone else said if you go to an earlier orientation, you get an earlier slot in August to register classes..is this true? can someone check for me cus i can only make the last orientation in june. thanks

That doesn't seem fair since Sixth only has orientation in September.

yeah thats not fair at all

This is true. When you go to orientation they "reserve" a spot for you in the class. So when you go to pick classes in August if your spot was reserved for a class before someone elses, you will get the spot over them; they might also give you a number to sign up for classes in august, so that is another reason. But for the OP, i wouldnt worry about going to the last june date being a problem. Its not the last orientation date; the only people that really get screwed over are those that go in september.

what if you're a regents scholar? they get priority enrollment so they should be fine even if they go in september right?

"the only people that really get screwed over are those that go in september."

GREAT. And I was lovin' the idea of Sixth college. :P

Nooooo. This is terrible news.

lindzeeo: yes, Regents Scholars do get priority enrollment. Either this means they will open registration to us earlier, or we will just get priority enrollment starting sophomore year.

And I'm sure enrollment won't be THAT big of an issue, even if you go to orientation in sept and don't get to enroll first. Most freshman classes are really big and take a lot of freshmen, so I doubt that they will get filled up that easily.

a few weeks ago a student from UCSD said he never once had a problem with signing up for classes. he said ne was never waitlisted and always got his first choice classes. of course, he could have just picked classes no one wanted, or had some sneaky ninja move to get priority, but in any case, he said he never had problems. the main thing you should worry about is not weather you will get the actual course or not, but rather, what time you will have to take it.

oh, and didn't they say we sign up for classes in august? how is having orientation in september (just days before the quarter starts) beneficial?

I hope so, COLLEGE!
I like Sixth, but that bites if I'll have to wake up for class at the buttcrack of dawn everyday just because our orientation isn't until September. And although I know the advantage is that it won't interfere with any of my summer plans, I still wonder why it's the only college that doesn't hold it in late June-early July. It makes me feel like we'd be missing out on meeting people. Oh well.

you're still going to meet people. just different people. =]

well.. if i am not mistaken... i can't really remember... but don't we sixers get an on-line orientation which is for enrolling in the classes around july or something?... i'll try to find the place where i read that...

We sign up for classes in August after we receive counselor recommendation, but if it's true that everyone who goes to an earlier orientation gets to pick earlier, we could still be screwed.

i think they reserve a number of spots for each orientation date. Same goes for transfer students. Its all proportionalized to be fair

I believe the regents scholar prioity enrollment begins with the 2nd quarter. So we're in the same boat as everybody else on this first go-round.

Wait, wait, how come on the confirmation page, #10, it says (And I quote):

Students will be assigned random start times for enrollment between August 22nd-25th. YOU MUST ENROLL IN YOUR COURSES ON HTTP://TRITONLINK.UCSD.EDU when your start time begins, or thereafter.

It says RANDOM. No where does it say that early orientation students get early appointments. Maybe we should really get someone to actually CALL UCSD and confirm your speculation.

Furthermore, under the FAQ of "Does it matter whether we come to orientation in June or September? When will my student enroll in courses?" the answer states: "Which orientation program you attend has no impact on student course enrollment. You should pick your session based on convenience for you and your student. All students will be assigned random start times for on-line course enrollment between August 22nd-25th Students have more information on this process in their website."

Well, there ya have it. Good researching, IGotIn!
