Class Scheduling Question

Parents, I have a question.

Have you ever taken two 3-hour CC courses back-to-back with only a 5 minute break on the same day? (9am-11:54am and 12pm-2:54pm)

Is it doable? Suicide? Let's assume you pick this schedule because you must work 40 hours.

I think it depends on the circumstances. For example, some 3 hour classes have a mandatory break in the middle of the session of 10 minutes. Some classes the break may routinely stretch out to 15 minutes. Other professors might have the class end 10 or 15 minutes early instead, placing that "break" at the end of class. And other professors might routinely ignore the break, policy or not.

I think it also depends on the subject being taught. So, try to find out from people who have taken the same class (with the same professor) and see how it is structured. Some classes mentally are very enjoyable and social and low key, others would be a grilling all the way through. I'd want one of the two classes to be social and low key.

Overall, it seems doable, but I'd want more details on the actual classes and professors first.

Annika

Could one of the classes be taken online?

Both are computer classes; no to online.

I couldn't do it. I asked my current college kids that are home for the break and they both said that they wouldn't be able to concentrate pulling back to back 3hour classes.

Only you can decide for yourself. Hope it works out for you.

I think the issue is less the logistics of the two classes, for such a long time on the same day....

And more the issue of preparation for them. Will there be papers/homework due for both frequently? Can you schedule your time well so that you can do that? Can you prepare reading, programming exercises, whatever.... for both?

After all, once out of school we mostly tend to work 8 hour (or more) days. And we often have intense days - presentations to clients, deadlines for projects, etc. ... that mean 8 or more intense hours in a day.

There is the issue of food and drink, so that you can be alert and stay well. If you can bring lunch or eat at breaks, and you feel it is doable... I would at least try it.

I will try to do it. I will make sure I bring a bag of goodies (fruits, snacks, water) with me to keep me alert. I do work 8 hours a day so the length of the entire day doesn't bother me. It's the the very short break in-between courses that worried me (I usually take 30-minute lunches between 1-2pm). Thanks for the clarification, jmmom.

I used to schedule all my classes TTh 930AM-930PM, I ended up with a break in the late afternoon, but it went 930-1045 / 1100-1230 / 1245-130 / 200-315/ 600-945

The 6pm class always had a 10-15 minute bathroom/snack break. I happened to work better at night so the two night classes were fine, but also it allowed me to work 5 days a week, or on an exam week I could take a Mon or Wed off to study. Not ideal and not the 'classic college experience' I want for my kids, but it was what I needed to do and it was fine

It sounds OK if each of the classes has a bathroom break. Unless the two classrooms are in the same building, it would not be possible to go to the bathroom between the end of the first class and the beginning of the second, and most people can't go 6 hours without going to the bathroom.

Less than the time spent, it would be that the class was in the same field for me. As the OP stated they were both re: computers. If it was an English/Computer. Psych/Computer. Maybe. Computer/Computer... my mind might explode and I'd worry about keeping them straight.
