Class Timing

I don't even think 2 is always accurate...
I know my professor complains pretty often about his morning class.

I think they just like to torture people by only offering a required class at 8 am. then they can feel like we're suffering too as they arrive at the office at 9 every morning.

2 would explain why some classes are at night (for adjuncts) but not in the morning.

At my college professors can pick the meeting times of their classes themselves (after consultation with the department of course). The result: way too many classes meet 10-11 or 10-11:30.

I'll be a freshman next year and my school scheduled my required classes for me. The only problem is that they gave me a Chem lab at 8AM on Fridays :( All of my other classes are after 10AM :)

8AMs are often unavoidable as a freshman unfortunately... I had them throughout freshman year. It was terrible.

well... this is my third year, and unfortunately, i got stuck with a year long series of 8:30AMs every f--ing day, M-F, Fall, Winter, and Spring!!! It was such a draggggg and totally killed the freedom and point of college. it felt like high school all over again. i don't mind 9:30s every TTH, or two days a week, even three. But I just can't believe i put myself through that torture this whole year!! don't everrrrrrr do it!!! it has totally killed my love for the subject, thanks to the annoying times we must wake up and the arrogant little TA, and i will never ever want to take another 8:30 class ever again or of similiar subject.

Okay, i am one of those crazies who gets up at 7 AM to hit up the gym or run. With everybody going to the gym after classes finish at 2:35 or 4, the only other option I could do was just to get up and work out before classes. Otherwise, I would drive myself crazy just thinking about getting to the gym all day if I didn't do it first thing in the morning. I just tend to focus more once I've done something that I like to do before I start working.

So in other words, consider the rest of your life, not just that 8 AM class. Also, I have to point out that generally it's the math and science classes that meet that early because of the aftenoon labs (particularly if you're at a LAC when an actual prof comes to the lab). Being a history major, I never had a class earlier than 11:20 since my sophomore year! (with the exception of my independent study that meets once a week, ugh, at 8:30).

That's good! I'm going to try and get myself into a similar routine this fall just maybe not quite as early (preferably by committing to some PE class.) I figure a lot in my life is changing so what's a better time to get into new habits?

Personally, I'd much rather take a 9AM class than an 8PM.

I have to take my calc class at 8am and I'm really dreading it! It was my only option because all the other calc classes conflicted with a very important class with only one section available. Is it really that bad if I'm able to have 1-2 hours afterward available for naps?

While we are on the subject, does anyone have any good suggestions on ways to have better concentration or energy in those early classes? Coffee has lost its effect on me.

Just remember that getting up for that eventual 'big-boy/big girl' job at 0500-0600 every morning after college is going to be hell if you've been cushy during the entire 4 years.

That may be true, but at least I'll be getting paid to do that.

I'm paying for college and if I want my sleep schedule to be cushy it should be cushy.

Okgirl, two words: red bull.

am i the only one unaffected by energy drinks? i've tried several and all they do is make me so jittery that i can't concentrate. there's no energy boost whatsoever.
(and coffee has lost its affect me, too.)

and how many jobs actually start at 5 AM anyways? most people i know go to work at 8, 7 at the earliest.
and like mmike said, at least you're being paid for it.

Caffeine doesn't make me jittery, it just makes me very very awake, and the more of it, the more awake I am. Red bull (i've never tried any other energy drink) is great for that, for me.

I'm perfectly happy to get up and do something early if I'm getting something out of it. Money, especially, is a great motivator.

I just saw this for the first time since last night. Anyways, sadly, I cannot switch out of my classes which will be everyday 8-10 ish. I'm so miserable with this. But, misery loves company. And...so does my roommate and most people I know! :D

Considering that I can't switch (I tried..), what would you guys suggest for me to do? Realize, I will be a freshman and I plan to attend class for the most part.

Clarification: I can do energy drinks. But, me + energy drinks ...scares me. And it seems like such a costly habit..especially if I'm drinking red bull everyday.

do your best to get eight hours of sleep the nights before you have those classes. that's the #1 thing to do. and tell yourself every morning in the beginning of the semester, "i'm going to love this class", until you actually believe it. the positive attitude will help.

I never had an 8AM, and my classes last year started at 11 last fall and 10 mwf 11 tr this spring.

HOWEVER, it is really not that hard. If you have an early class that you care about going to, set your alarm, and get up. All you have to do is roll out of bed. Seriously, it's not that hard.

When you start thinking "well, I don't really have to go... but I probably should..." that's when you end up not going.

Just get up. You can wake up on the walk to class.

how can you talk about how hard it is if you've never done it?

I ended up missing my 9 o clock class like 5-7 times. (it's kind of ridiculous because i had 8'o clock and 9 o clock class every day last semester and I hardly missed those) try to save yourself some trouble.
