Classes for senior year?

So I’m currently in AICE Marine, AP English Language and Comp., APUSH, APES, medical academy (3rd year), precalculus honors, AP Physics 1, and AP Psychology. My school is REALLY competitive which is why I’ve taken so many APs junior year. I’ve also taken AP human (freshman) and AP world (sophomore) and AP Bio (sophomore). I’ve been trying to think of what to take next year as a senior but I don’t know. The only thing I can think of is AP Lit, AP Gov/econ, medical academy (year 4), AP Stats, and AP Physics 2. I still need two more classes and I definitely know I’m NOT taking AP Calc or AP Chem.
Thank you

I would appreciate any help.

If you’re planning on entering STEM, which, judging by your other courses, seems very likely, universities will look down upon your decision to take AP Stats over AP Calc if you have the opportunity. Also, have you taken any sort of chemistry in high school? If not, you definitely also want to take that if you have the chance, even if it has to be standard or Honors-level. AP Chemistry is hilariously convoluted and intimidating at times, so you don’t necessarily have to take it; just make sure you’ve taken some sort of chemistry.

The APs you listed seem appropriate for a senior to take. If you can’t think of anything else to fit those last two classes, try to fill the last two spots with classes you enjoy or in which you are interested. Don’t worry about whether or not they are weighted; you will have at least ten or eleven APs by the time you graduate.

I am planning on entering STEM actually  I just don’t feel as though AP Calc is a good fit for me because I got my first C ever as a semester grade in precalc and I’m really struggling. I also took chem honors last year

@r2v2018 ^^

@r2v2018 I’m thinking of taking AICE Sociology next too.

What AICE classes are available?
Where are you with foreign language?
What colleges and majors are you aiming for?

@MYOS1634 The AICE classes that I know of are AICE Psych, AICE Marine, AICE European, AICE Spanish, AICE English, AICE Sociology, AICE Global Perspectives, AICE Thinking skills, and AICE General Paper. I’ve taken 3 years of Spanish. I’m aiming for UF and pre-med/biology/biomedical engineering. (Not exactly sure yet but something medical)

Sounds like our local high school! Did Hicken teach AP Human?

Either way, I am sure it is a competitive HS. UF will select “AP” kids over “AICE” kids, if they take enough AP classes (which you’re doing, good job!) and keep a high GPA.

UF cares very much about course RIGOR. They will review your senior schedule for rigor. For that reason, you should take AP Calc. UF doesn’t consider your grades in your senior year, or your AP scores (for any year), but they will want to see that you’re taking calc. It’s ok to take AB calc, over BC. It’s also Ok to get C’s and B’s in the class (you don’t want to do worse than that, or UF may rescind any offers they make, when they see your final transcripts).

AP Lit is good, it will earn you AP credit at any Florida university, and UF (and others) like to see a 4th year of English/writing.

AP Stats is fine. It’s not as rigorous as other classes, but also can earn you college credit, and it’s often taken by other students concurrently with AP Calc/AICE math.

AP Physics 2 is viewed as rigorous. If you’re OK with your current AP Physics 1 class, then this class would help improve your senior schedule rigor.

AP Gov/Econ is useful for filling out your schedule. It’s not too rigorous (you don’t want to over do it your senior year), while still being an AP class. Based on your major, the Econ AP credits could prove useful.

I would say, AP Calc AB (which is a year long class?), and AP Lit are most haves. AP Physics 2 is nice, but if you hated AP Physics 1, you may want to pass. The others are useful for filling out your schedule.

Remember, UF will only be using your 9th thru 11th grades (plus a few classes in 8th grade) to calculate your UF GPA. It’s important you keep your GPA up this semester.

Also, UF is very holistic in admissions. Make sure you have plans for summer that include work, volunteering, sports, etc. This is your last summer to pad your applications.

And if you haven’t already, plan on taking the SAT or AP by the end of the school year. That way you have the summer to study (if you don’t like your results), and can take one or both again, early in your senior year.

Good Luck!!

EDIT: last thing, I see no reason why you shouldn’t take your 4th year in the medical academy and stay with your “cohort” of friends.

An issue here is that if you are in medical academy I assume you want to be premed… and being premed more or less assumes oyu’ve taken calculus in HS and not taking AP Chem would place you at a severe disadvantage compared to others. So, are you going to be premed?

IF PREMED IN COLLEGE
1.medical academy (3rd year) => take Medical Academy 4

  1. AP Physics 1=> if you've taken Honors Chemistry, take AP Chem (strongly recommended for premeds) and since it's a hard AP only take one more science class (AICE?) If you've not taken Honors Chem, take it or see if you can take AICE Chem or similar and add AP Physics 2.

AICE Marine
APES
==>3+4, those two are electives; I would recommend AICE Spanish to prepare for “Spanish for the Health professions” in college + either AICE Sociology or AICE Global Perspectives

  1. AP English Language and Comp => AP Lit
  2. APUSH => AP Gov/Econ
  3. precalculus honors => Calculus AB or AICE Math
  4. AP Psychology => AP Stats

IF NOT PREMED IN COLLEGE

  1. medical academy 4 only to stay with your cohort
  2. AP Physics 2
3+4. 2 AICE classes of your choice, probably AICE Euro and another one
  3. AP Lit
  4. AP Gov/Econ
  5. AP Stats
  6. Culinary Arts (a very useful skill to have that you’ll enjoy your whole life - also, a good way to let off steam from a very rigorous senior year)

I’m a current senior who has been accepted to UF for the fall. I had a 4.41 (now about a 4.6, though I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter) UF GPA going into senior year and 1300 SATs (720 Reading / 580 Math). My extracurricular activities weren’t anything to write home about, although I do have one leadership position.

I strongly believe my course rigor is what got me in, I’ve taken 8 APs (all core APs except for two of them, Psychology and Art History) and 12 academic Dual Enrollment classes (UF seems to really like in-state DE; I could be wrong, though). For this reason, and the fact that you are wanting to do something with medicine, I strongly recommend Calculus. For what it’s worth, I’ve never taken Calculus in high school, but I picked a humanities-related major that had literally no connection to STEM or any math/science requirements besides the bare minimum gen eds. I want to caution you that I feel like I did go a bit overboard by taking way too rigorous of a courseload senior year (all APs/Dual Enrollment + level 4 foreign language) as well as way too many classes in general (9-10 classes first semester) and I feel like some of what I did was a bit extraneous and unnecessary. However, UF is a selective school and you should do whatever you can to make yourself appear as attractive as possible to them.

Edited to add: OP took Honors Chem sophomore year and I believe AICE Math 1 is equivalent to Pre-Calculus, which OP is enrolled in right now.

@Gator88NE Thank you for the thorough response; I really appreciate it. Soulard teaches AP Human. My current weighted gpa is 4.5 and unweighted is 3.6. Today I woke up to very disappointing news regarding my ACT score (27). I’ve done better than that on the 5 practice tests I’ve done. I’ll consider doing AP Calc but I don’t know whether I’ll be doing good. The teacher is very hard and math isn’t my strongest subject.

@MYOS1634 Thank you for that breakdown! I just haven’t considered doing AP Calc and AP Chem because they’re the 2 hardest classes at my school. Math especially is not my strongest subject and in AP Chem EVERYONE ends with a C or D for the semester. I don’t know if I want to do that :frowning: I ended with 2 A’s in chem honors but AP Chem is different

@r2v2018 Congrats on your acceptance!! I’ll consider AP Calc but I don’t know if I’m up for that type of rigor :frowning:

Does your school offer calculus honors or regular calculus (or AICE MATH 2, which includes calculus)?
A D in AP chem would get you rescinded so you can’t take that risk. However it’ll make your path in college harder and you really don’t want to tackle calculus and college chemistry together for the first time in college. So if AP chem isn’t possible then you must take some form of calculus.

A 27 on your first test isn’t bad.

This year, the middle 50% for admitted students had an ACT score between 29 to 33, with an average of 30. You’re going to want to get your score up to a 29 or 30, but keep in mind that 25% of the students DID have less than a 29.

Your weighted GPA is fine, this year’s middle 50% was from 4.2 to 4.6, with a 4.4 average. Still, try to keep your GPA up this year.

Keep in mind that at UF, Rigor and GPA are more important than Test scores. The silly admissions essay is more important than test scores…

Keep your rigor up your senior year, but don’t kill yourself. You still want to enjoy your last year in HS.

Follow MYOS1634 advise, they are much more knowledgeable on admissions than I am.

Good Luck!

@MYOS1634 I believe there is honors calculus but I’m not 100% sure on that. Definitely no AICE Math 2 though. If there is a honors calculus class, should I take it with AP Stats?

Give us a list of all the classes you have taken in the past along with all useful information so we can give more accurate advice along with the ease of access to a community college or university for dual enrollment. This is not enough information.

An example is whether you can take Clinical Psychology and Developmental Psychology at a local community college (both are ridiculously easy compared to AP Psych because they cover much less and you know what is expected).

Yes, absolutely. It’ll be a gentle introduction that will help you when you take calculus 1 in college.
