What classes or professors will you remember for years?

I've only taken 1 year of classes, but I've definitely enjoyed Professor Sabato's intro to politics class, especially with great speakers and the fact that he's always very open and very helpful to students despite being a busy person. Some people don't like him though, but I think this will be one of my favorite classes in undergrad.

I also won't forget taking Intro to Statistics with Propieszlaka or however you spell her name. That was a debacle.

ANTH 225 - Racism, Multiculturalism and Nationalism by Richard Handler!!!!!! Must-take.

It depends on the person. Some people would probably tear their hair out after the first week of ANTH225...but...HIST361, history of espionage and intelligence in the 20th century, is an excellent class. It's team taught by two professors: Timothy Naftali, who served on the 9/11 commission, and Gerald Haines, the former chief historian of the CIA. Excellent class. Some others I've heard are good are PLAP 314 (Mass Media and American Politics, with Paul Freedman), PLAP 101 (Intro to American Politics with Larry Sabato), ECON 201 (intro to Microeconomics, with Ken Elzinga) and HIEU 302 (Greek and Roman Warfare, with prof Lendon).

HIST 361 "History of Espionage" is amazing, both Haines and Naftali are great lecturers and have some great perspectives on what is an extremely important topic right now

PLAP 314 "Madd Media and AP" with Prof. Freedman is overrated, I didn't think it was that great of a class

HIUS 323 "Rise and Fall of the Slave South" with Ed Ayers is an amazing class, anyone with any interest at all in American history should try and take it

ECON 355 "Economy of China" with Prof. Reynolds (head of Undergrad. Econ) is probably the best class I've taken so far for any future econ / foreign affairs majors out there..

Great tips so far. My S is making a list for future reference. Thanks all.

I second that, ANTH 225 - Racism, Multiculturalism and Nationalism by Richard Handler...GREATTTT CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does Handler turn that class into a bully pulpit at all?

on topic, yet off topic:

does UVa have a professor rating system? Baylor has an extensive one, but I didn't even know about it for a full year.

-Mike

For ANTH225, true it depends on the type of person you are. But even if you are liberal, you will still learn a lot from what Handler has to say because his opinions are really amazing and will make you think of the world upside down!!! Conservatives are usually flipped out by this class since the things Handler says are pretty radical. But even so, it's good for anyone to take his class because it has made me think of race in a different way.

HIST361 may be an excellent class to but it also depends on the type of person you are :) With regards to this, all I am saying is that ANTH225 in my opinion is a class that one should not miss at UVA. Period.

I would consider Handler's class more conducive to a liberal than a conservative, simply by virtue of its title. Do many conservatives enjoy that class, or Handler in general?

Handler is known to be kind of a d-bag. I mean, c'mon, with a name like Dick Handler (lol) what would you expect? He's a professor of anthropology, which is a notoriously BS-y subject.

Two not yet mentioned:

Philosophy 141 - Forms of Reasoning taught by James Cargile

HIUS 367 - History of the Civil Rights Movement taught by Julian Bond. Word is he may be retiring, but he is teaching the course in the Fall.

And, if you take chemistry, Dean Harman is a great chemistry professor.

are you kidding beeber?

i recommend to any and everyone to avoid pretty much any class that starts with a 1. those are generally taught straight out of a text book.

There is information on the COD from past semester's end of course surveys (UVA username required), there's a website by the current third-year class with some reviews and a large collection of grade distribution pie charts (thecourseforum.com - registration with a virginia.edu email address required), and there's of course ratemyprofessors.com and similar websites.

I don't think so. Who says anth is a bs-y subject? How can you denounce an academic field like that? Have you even taken an anthro class?

The fact that you are a conservative might make you think that Handler's a douche but he is probably the most amazing professor I have ever met here. Wait till you take the class and see how much sense he makes in his opinions. The entire world has to hear it.

The fact that I'm a conservative? huh? Who said anything about politics? I'm speaking based on the talk he gave to Echols Scholars last year and my brief conversation with him. HTH.

Well your "brief conversation" with him doesn't translate what he's really like in class. His opinions are amazing and stop calling him a douche because if he was a douche, he wouldn't be one of the more well-known Deans that he is. Secondly, he is also a very famous professor. If you go to www.ratemyprofessors.com and look up Richard Handler (please don't criticize him by calling "dick" handler coz that's rude), he has the best ratings and comments ever from students here.

I was criticizing him by calling him dick? "Dick" is a nickname for "Richard." When combined with the last name "Handler," it becomes funny. Oh well.

"I mean, c'mon, with a name like Dick Handler (lol) what would you expect? He's a professor of anthropology, which is a notoriously BS-y subject."

You call this being respectful and funny? Think again.
