classes?

helllo everyone. so, did any of you westcoasters stay up til 4am to register for classes? haha. anyways, I was just wondering what classes everyone is taking. Is anyone else not taking a FYS?

I’m taking…

 • Politics of the Muslim World
 • Social Anthropology
 • Frosts, Stevens, Williams (Poetry)
 • Ballet
 • Modern dance

I'm taking an FYS, but that's only because I have always been extremely interested in the Balkans. I didn't have to stay up as we're 12 hours ahead, I just had to make a mad dash for the computer in the middle of dinner. :P

I'm taking:
FYS Balkans
Econ 103
German 201
Calc 105

BTW, are a lot of people planning on taking five classes? I wou;d like to, but I am not sure if it's wise, seeing how I'll be needing sometime to get settled.

I'm taking:

FYS Ancient Stories to Modern Ears
Plate Techtonics
Environment and Society
Intermediate Spanish I (hopefully)

I encountered a computer problem last night and was not able to register for the FYS I wanted that is pertinent to my major. If there is ANYONE who is considering switching out of Matters of Life and Death, please email or PM (preferably email) me so I can have your place. It would just be the perfect class for my major. I did log on exactly when registration opened, it's just that there was an issue. Thanks. I thought this was worth a try.

clairethebear, I too stayed up until 4 a.m. to register for classes from the West Coast! (I actually forgot that we were supposed to register yesterday, so my hours before 4 a.m. were pretty frantic 'cause I didn't know what to register for!) And it looks like we're taking two similar classes: Frost, Stevens, Williams (I'm not much of a poetry nut, so I hope the professor's good) and Social Anthropology....though I know there was more than one section of Soc. Anth. offered. Cool, cool...

I took off from work 1/2 an hour early to register, but that wasn't exactly hardship. (12 hour time diff like y0bb)

I've got:

Watching the Detectives
Upper Level Modern Chinese
Origins of the New Nation
Perspectives on Education

But I'm thinking of switching the last to inorganic chem.

I've decided not to take Calc 105 simply because I am sure that I will fail that class. Any suggestions as to what I might take instead?

Some sort of statistics class?

yup...statistics sounds great...I would have liked that too. Probably later.
I am taking : Calculus II, Economy 101, Anatomy of a few small machines (FYS) and Introduction to Macrosociology.
I am so sorry I couldn't take Elementary Spanish or Intermediate French. i would have really like to seriously study at least one language, but there were no more places available. Well, maybe in the second semester I will get more luck.

I'm sorry, but this "Garnet Gateway" is difficult.

Are we just registering for classes, or are we also choosing the time we take them?

in the class registration menu, I dont know what

CRSE or SEC means

ACT or REM means

and the subject window in the look up courses page is disastrously small!!!

who designed this thing?!?!?!? I hope it wasn't a Bates professor!

are the courses that are not offered to first years excluded from our searches?

Well you asked a bunch of questions so...
we are registering for classes and times, so basically if you see a class you like, take it at that a time that works out for you. some classes are offered at a few times, and others are just offered at one time, so you have to choose classes that fit into a your schedule.
CRSE means course (the course number) SEC means (I'm pretty sure) what section of that course, some courses have more than one section but it isn't really important.
ACT means how many people registered already for that class, and REM means how many spots are remaining.
The 'C' means that class is full.
What I would suggest you do is look onto the Bates college course catalog online (found under academics) and look up the classes they still have availible. The search shows all classes availible, not just first year classes, so with the course catalog you can see what classes are availible to first years and which classes require pre-requisites.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

alright, sounds good.

do you know when registration ends?

I was thinking about just waiting untill I get to bates to fill it out (I am now seeing that may be a bad idea)

well, apparently it didn't like me, b/c it said i hadn't met the prerequisit of calculus (which i took 2 yrs ago and 5'd the ap) for physics 106? and linear algebra - but physics went through anyway and stayed there for some reason, but i had to email the prof. so so she'd let me into linear algebra - but.. other than that it was pretty smooth...

FYS on nanotech
micro economics (101?)
physics... 106? maybe 107? one of those
linear algebra (math 205 maybe?)

unfortunately i ahve absolutely no idea what numbers the courses are, but there they are

wats fys?..............

I got
Constitutional interpretation
Literature through Catyclism

now I need to decide between

plate techtonics
Enviroment and Society (this is a 200 class, not a good idea to have 2 of those)
Chemical Structure

(English)
I really do not have any choice!!!
the only 100 class available is "Monsters,Magicians&Medievalism"

any suggestions?!?!?

and photography I have to request permission? how do I do that? call?

yes, how does it work with photography? I was kind of interested too.

Call or email the instructor, tell them what your backround and interest in the class is, and ask if they can contact to registrar's office to give an "override" so that you can register (assuming they give permission for you to register for the class)
