I’m just looking at tuition and standard fees (ignoring HC, department fees, etc) to get most direct comparison and from OOS perspective after merit offers:
Arizona State - $13.5k
UofSC - $12k (received reduction to in-state tuition merit)
UTK - $10k
Clemson - $30.5k
Updated amounts (had picked up amounts including department fees)
The biggest mystery to me is if it’s state funding driven, how is UofSC able to seemingly be much more generous?
My OOS son (1500 SAT, National Merit Commended Scholar, Eagle Scout, competitive swimmer) got $10,500 for one scholarship, then another $500 for another. Plus some loans, of course. Has WAY higher offers from elsewhere.
Looks to me like perhaps the OOS scholarship of $10,500 was on the high end for this year at Clemson?
Ok, just took another look, $500 family scholarship, $7500 OOS scholarship, Clemson non resident grant $9500 (loan or scholarship?), are these for just one year?
From what I could find the non resident grants are need based and are renewable (required to maintain minimum 2.5 GPA and complete 24 credit hours per year).
33 ACT, 3.9 UGPA, 7 AP rest honors. Interesting about a need based grant, we will have 3 in college next year, have had 2 several times and never qualified for FA, my daughter applied to 19 schools and only Pitt gave her FA (and her twin wasn’t offered any anywhere). Of course most offered more merit.
Their OOS scholarship budget is more than 3x Clemson’s ($27 million vs nearly $85 at UofSC). UofSCs goal has been increasing stats, just as Clemson’s was over the years. It will be reduced once they reach their goal.
That explains a lot. It’s a shame, because Clemson really does have a lot going for it, but I guess the market will bear those prices because they don’t seem to have a shortage of applicants. I know they get a lot of applicants from the Northeast, so maybe their OOS tuition looks like a bargain coming from there.
Daughter was selected for the Lyceum Scholars Program which comes with $2,500/year, but today Clemson only offered her loans.
We are OOS, and Baylor has offered her so much that her COA there is $29k and she still has the opportunity to bring that down even more, so it looks like we’re heading to Waco in the fall!
Same financial for my son; 35 ACT; 3.8 UW; 4 yrs varsity football (Captain senior year); started a club; president of a community service club - $11,000 merit (OOS)
Just got son’s merit info - $10,500 Clemson University Scholarship + 3,000 Rockwell Engineering Scholars. Am I correct to assume there is not an out of state tuition waiver as well?
Stats - OOS (obviously 35 ACT, 3.8 Unweighted, Tons of AP/Dual Credit, 4 years of varsity sports, started his own charity company, lots of hours give back, internship + job experience…
Yeah; I think D20s class was the first to get hit, since it went from $20k down to 12k. We figured the 20k was an outlier and budgeted for 15k. Listening to friends with kids from NJ and MA, with merit it came out close to their home state options. I personally wouldn’t pay $200k+ for undergrad, but I’m pretty frugal. We’re a relo family, so we weren’t tied to our state; we decided to move up our last relo and are now enjoying our retirement home in SC. I wish Clemson could/would offer more in merit; it’s truly beautiful here, but sadly it is what it is. Hoping everyone finds their perfect match!
No, Clemson does not offer OOS tuition waivers, BUT congrats to him!! He’s the first to beat the NPC in quite a while. Good luck with his final decision!
My son is OOS and got 11,000 a year. 10,500 OOS tuition scholarship and 500.00 Clemson scholarship. He got in in early November and his scholarship was mentioned in his acceptance letter.
