Comparing schools…in state tuition at Binghamton $24K or oos at clemson $50K, which school would you choose and why?
well let’s start with the $104,000 question, can you or your parents afford an extra $104,000 over 4 years?
Affordability is ok, so that’s why I was more curious of the comparison between schools besides that one is in the north and the other south. Both large universities for an econ major, so really just wondering people’s opinions on each school as i can see myself at both.
Suny Bing has a rep of a very good sunny school where “smart less affluent kids go and succeed” the weather sucks in the winter, the campus is OK building wise but the teachers are good and you leave with a good sense of the real world. I doubt Clemson is worth 104,000 more but that is just my view.
Binghamton. NYS best and brightest attend there for undergrad. It’s a great value. Years ago I’m sure I would have said Clemson was the way to go but since the long recession and now the one we are currently facing, Bing all the way.
I’m from DC area. Visited Clemson. New Business school almost finished. Amazing Dean and overall a lot of momentum and energy on campus. My top choice.

new Dean (from Harvard, Stanford): http://www.clemson.edu/business/about/profiles/bizdean
Binghamton. Happy students. Engaging classes. Binghamton is on the way up. I definitely don’t think Clemson is worth 100k more than Bing.
Unless you are from a family of millionaires who have no concerns about the financial crisis we are currently in and which may only get worse, I would say Bing absolutely. My kids all went to (different) SUNY’s and I firmly believe that the education you get there is amongst the best values around. Bing is an excellent school now (when I was in college it had the party school rep, but no longer). Yes, the weather is awful in the winter and the campus is hideous, but the kids I know who are there all seem to love it.
Good luck and have a great college experience whichever school you choose.
@techmom99 , hey, the campus really grows on you! I wouldn’t describe it as “hideous” as much as “not beautiful.” But it looks pretty nice in the fall and with snow?
Kids are definitely partying at Binghamton, but they are also working hard. I think the difference is that Clemson has a much bigger Greek presence, which likely means there is significantly more partying at Clemson than at Binghamton.
Thank you all for your input. I am planning to go to law school and know that high gpa is the driving factor, but I have heard that Binghamton has a deflating grade curve which can hurt gpa…thoughts?
If you are planning to go to law school then definitely save your money and go to Bing. Grad deflation at Bing? Have not heard that. The people I know who went there did well in H.S. and well in college.
By student profile, Binghamton has placed somewhat higher than Clemson, though, it would seem, not so much higher as to present challenges with respect to grade deflation.

Bing is a great bargain for what you want to do. Another vote for Bing!
And congratulations, BTW!
For law school: GPA and LSAT – you can start studying now for that LSAT, for real. And you want to aim for a Top 15 school in order to get a job that uses your law degree–and to pay off the debt. Any major at all is okay. Any major: foreign language, engineering, nursing, psych, theater, women’s studies, history, classics – whatever genuinely interests you. Just get top grades and top LSAT scores. Law is a big umbrella that covers any and all disciplines.
@frosh2024 , my son is a freshman at Bing. I believe his grades are fair and reflect his work. He would agree. I don’t think there is grade deflation.
