I am in need of some clarification. I am very confused regarding CLEP/AP/Spanish placement. My dd took five years of Spanish and took the AP Spanish lang test this Spring. She did well and will receive the 4 credits for her effort. She took the Spanish placement test at Bama Bound and place in SP201 (She thinks SP205, but signed up for 201 – mind you, she attended Bama Bound solo so I am just repeating what she told me.) Is it worth having her take the Spanish CLEP test this summer for additional credit?

I’d vote yes:
AP Credit for a 3 is 4 hours (credit for SP 103)
4 is 7 hours (credit for SP 103 and 201)
5 is 10 hours (credit for SP 103, 201, and 202)
Clep credit: score a 48-51 receive 8 credit hours and test out of SP 101 and 102
score a 52-55 11 credit hours and test out of 101, 102,and 201
score a 56-80 receive 14 credit hours and test out of Sp 101,102, 201, 202

I think CLEP would be a great idea…likely more credits.

i don’t think you can “place” into 205. I think you place into 101, 102, 201, 202, or 3XX…but I could be wrong.

Thank you so much for the info! She actually will get 7 credits then for her AP score. I will pursue the CLEP testing and I am pretty sure she will be willing. Thanks m2ck – I don’t think she is correct with the SP205, but like I said earlier she went solo on the registration adventure. I am trying very hard to clip my helicopter wings. However if there is more credit to be had, I will happily intervene and nudge her in the right direction.
Looks like CLEP testing is in her immediate future!
