Not sure where to put this....but does anyone have any knowledge about these exams? Specifically I was wondering about the precal exam. If the college you will attend has an equivalent class you could get credit for wouldn't it be a good idea to do it...especially since there is no AP for precalc???

Are there colleges that give credit for pre-calc?

Even elite colleges offer pre-calc courses, mathmom. It sounds like a good idea for students not pursuing math-focused majors. However, I don't know of any student who is doing CLEP anymore.

The school D2 will be attending will accept precalc CLEP and give her credit...We were thinking to have her do this as when it is combined with her AP credits she will have enough to enter as a sophomore. Not that we want her to skip classes but rather have more seniority for housing and registration. Does that make sense???

Well, according to College Board, 2900 colleges in the U.S. give credit for one or more CLEP tests and 386 colleges in the U.S. give credit for the new pre-calc clep test. If you are considering one of these colleges (and if they would not already be giving you credit for a pre-calc course on the basis of an ACT or SAT or SAT II score), taking the pre-calc CLEP test would be a good idea.

A lot of colleges give no credit for CLEP. More give credit for a few of the CLEPs. Some (GW comes to mind) are quite generous with CLEP credit.

I know they offer it, but they don't usually offer credit. Just wondering. U. of Florida gave CLEP credits back in the 70s, I don't know if they still do.

Schools around here would give three credits for the precalc exam. Oh...and the state will play for the test!

Have your D take the precalc CLEP if the college accepts it. Tell her it will be like taking a driver's ed test - all computer. (If by some fluke she doesn't pass it, she can take it again in six months.)

It will be nice for her to have a more advanced sophomore standing.

NorthMinnesota,

As MidwestMom2Kids noted, there are actually thousands of colleges that accept CLEP credit. Many of them are highly regarded as well.. in fact the same company that oversees the SAT does so for the CLEP.

One thing that you may not realize is that the school determines how much credit they will grant for a particular test. If you speak to the transfer office at colleges they'll be able tell you exactly how much credit your D can earn.

If you have any other questions, I have a Squidoo lens on the subject actually at: CLEP Exams

It includes further links to information. I actually reviewed study guides for the exams if you are interested.

Squidoo??????

My S clepped college algebra II and received credit for the class. He's not doing a math major, so it allowed him to fulfill a pre-req at UCF. Added on with all his AP's, giving him sophomore status going in. We wished we'd had him CLEP german, but we didn't know about that, and his B.A. in Economics would like to see a year of college german (language), even though he had two years in h.s. If we'd realized that at the time he stopped taking German (end of sophomore year), we'd have had him CLEP then. I believe the scores stay on file up to 7 years. Oh well ... he's getting A's in German, and it gives him a "gimmy" class. :)

My daughter did well on the the Spanish CLEP after she had finished taking Spanish, but the college she's going to only accepts a few CLEPs, and Spanish is unfortunately not one of them. She also did a great job on the chemistry CLEP after a year of honors chemistry, but once again, the college she's going to only accepts a few CLEPs, and chemistry is not one of them, either.

Yes, Squidoo!! It's a great website where anybody can create web pages very easily which Squidoo likes to call "lenses". It's really a play on words because anybody with some knowledge on a particular topic can create a lens that is "focused" on that topic. Check it out if you like. It's a very friendly and supportive community. Oh and I should mention that you can actually make a few bucks with your lenses as well.

zebez & MidwestMom2Kids: Congratulations on them passing the exams. Those credits translate into real $.

Thanks for the squidoo primer. I am amazed at all the knowledge out there!
Comes in real handy. With my new computer loaded with vista, I am googling things like: "XXX no longer works with vista" all the time. So far, someone has had an answer!
