I plan to enroll in one of the few schools that will except CLEP credit, as a way to take more advanced classes. If a couple years later I try to transfer to a school that doesn't accept the CLEP would I have any problems?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Check the CLEP policies carefully.

The most likely scenario is that the first place will give you credit, and place you into the upper level course, while the second place won’t give you any credit for the CLEP but will give you transfer credit for the upper level course. This would mean that you need to take extra coursework to make up for any gaps in your program caused by the coursework that the CLEP exams were used for.

And, by the way, where do you get the notion that “few schools” accept CLEP credit? Many do. Start with the websites of your home-state public Us. Often they are very generous about CLEP.

Thanks for the reply! Correction, plenty of schools accept CLEP but seemingly far less than AP. So if I pursue a finance or Econ major, and skip some mandatory intro Econ courses through CLEP credit; then transfer to a school the does not accept CLEP and had the same mandatory inro classes, the fact that I was taking more advanced classes in that subject would’nt suffice? I don’t plan on using the CLEP to test out of an intro class and be done with that subject, only to gain advanced standing in a subject of interest/importance for major.
