CLEP exams and other questions regarding my transfer

So I was accepted into Clemson as a transfer for this Spring, and I have a few questions amidst all my excitement. At my previous college, we did not have biology or physics classes for freshman, so I am behind on my natural sciences requirements. I took the AP Biology exam and was unable to score high enough to get credit, but I took the class yearlong and am pretty sure I could pass a CLEP exam in bio. However, clemson’s website says CLEP score acceptance depends on the department, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? Could I take an IB exam as a college student and get credit for Bio? Because of my major and the minor I want to pursue, I will most likely have to take some summer classes if I can’t get a natural science credit.

Also, I have no bill or registration ticket for the upcoming semester despite getting my tigetown bound packet, receiving my login info, and being able to register for orientation. Is this common for transfers? Should I just be patient and wait for these things to come up in my iroar?

They will show up in iroar. Don’t worry about being behind. I am not sure about specific CLEP scores, but Clemson has a way of bypassing your AP and dual credit classes. In other words, you will end up taking the classes anyway.

@SCTigermom what do you mean you will end up taking the clsses anyway? I know several people who transfered in their AP and dual credit classes and got even more credits as some courses counted as two classes. Clemson was wonderful about accepting all credits and not making them take all those general ed clsses again.

@mweb136 Thats our experience. My son got credit for everything as expected based his AP Scores and Dual credit. He was just 2 credits short of entering as a sophomore and he doesn’t to repeat anything unless he wants to.

@Baxter126 so glad to hear that! We have worked the last two years on classes Clemson told us they will take if my son gets accepted for the fall of 2018. It’s the only way we can afford it from OOS and they truly have been wonderful with the whole process.

I should say we only have experience with AP and Dual credit classes as an entering Freshman. I don’t know about transferring. Here is a link to what you can credit for in case anyone hasn’t seen this https://www.clemson.edu/admissions/undergraduate/documents/apcreditchart.pdf

@mweb136 @baxter126 So how does the AP credit thing work? In looking at the chart my D will also have between 35-37 AP credits at Clemson depending on how she scores on Bio. But isn’t the school looking for you to pay for 8 full time semesters? Will the kids graduate early and thus only have to pay for 6 or 7 semesters? Or can you pay per credit and just spread the savings out?

@burghdad that’s wonderful! I believe for the majority of AP classes your child would need a 3 or higher for the class to transfer in. The chart does tell you which score is required for each course. Your child would just graduate early. You would not need to pay for 8 semesters. My son is on track if he gets accepted to graduate in two years. That truly is the only way we can afford it being OOS and my daughter right behind him wanting to attend Clemson also. There is a great course equivalency link on their site that you can see if the classes from your community college would transfter to Clemson. We use that all the time, but also confirm with admissions they will accept it. These are the dual college courses and community classes over the summer, etc. There is a great deal of money to be saved if your child is willing to do the work. We said you want in bad enough this is the way to do it without assuming so much debt. He said, ok.

@burghdad here is the link. https://transferringcredits.app.clemson.edu/transferequivalency.php

@burghdad What @mweb said is correct. You pay until your student graduates with the degree they desire. My son will be adding a double major and/or starting ear on a masters if he chooses. Some degrees allow some of you senior course work to count for the beginning of your masters. and Mweb - that is AWESOME!

@Baxter126 generally how many credits do you need to graduate?

@burghdad I think it’s about 120. I’m sure some degrees are a little more, but that’s an average of 30 credits per year.

Congrats on the transfer! Im wanting to transfer to Clemson in the fall, how soon did you get your admission decision after applying?
