clinical studies volunteer for money?

So I've been worrying where I'm gonna come up with the extra money I'll need for college this fall and was considered doing drug trials and such for money. It seems like pretty good money, I was wondering if anyone here has some experience with that? I called a bunch of places today and just had a response, they were offering $2,715 for a 16 day stay at their clinic testing arthritis drugs, which is probably more than I'd make during the whole summer with a summer job.

Anyone else consider doing this for money for college? My parents have been nagging me to get a job for months (I haven't had one since my sophomore year of HS) and while its not really a job, it will get me some money for college.

Also, what kind of things are there to do at these clinics? I'm sure the clinics would have information but I wouldn't doubt that they embellish it to make it seem better than it really is. Should I bring a pile of books to read? etc. Or a laptop to finally beat all those Baldur's Gate games that are supposed to be so good but I've never played them for more than a few minutes? heh

I don't know much about the subject but there may be some health risks involved. I remember a couple of years ago there was a big news story about some people taking part in such a trial becoming very seriously ill. Probably a rare occurence but definitely something to bare in mind. I probably would discourage my kids from doing it but I am something of a worrywart.

National Public Radio, NPR had a story on this issue earlier this week, check the website.
