So the applications just opened, and i was going through till I got to the major part.

I was originally planning on applying to the dual-program majors (Chem E- and Mat Sci E) But it seems like they are marked as "closed"

So I was curious if anyone have any advice for what major I should apply into if i ultimately want to end up in ChemE/Mat Sci E or Mat Sci E/EECS dual programs.

I thought closed majors are only in L&S.
I’ve never heard you have to get the permission from COE or CoC to do the joint majors.

Correct me if I’m wrong. I am surprised, to be honest.

You can only apply directly to a joint major as a junior transfer. For incoming freshmen, you could apply for one major in the college of engineering and then petition to switch to a joint major after completion of the freshman year. See below which is from the UCB College of Engineering website.

Joint Majors

You may also consider applying to one of our joint majors, which offer students a foundation in two fields of study. Only junior transfer applicants may apply directly to a joint major, however students admitted as freshmen may petition to change to a joint major after completing their first year at Berkeley (see the Undergraduate Handbook for more information on petitioning to a joint major)

UpMagic,

COE majors are quite competitive. EECS and undeclared engineering being the hardest to get into, while CoC chem E is the easiest out of the engineering majors to get in.

When I meant by closed majors such as Operations Research or Cognitive Science, you have to take certain courses (almost all of them are weeders, of course), get decent overall GPA’s, and then apply for those majors after 2~4 semesters in Berkeley. This is not about EECS or undeclared engineering that you apply during senior year in high school or as a transfer student, freezingbeast.

Now do joint majors in Engineering still go through the same process as those closed majors or pre-business people? Are there even enough people to have a competition to declare a certain joint major? I honestly don’t think so.

FYI - If you are a freshman admitted to another major in engineering and would like to petition for a joint major, you need to have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to be accepted. You may petition for the joint major at the beginning of the sophomore year. If you are a freshman admitted to the Engineering Undeclared program, you are eligible to declare a joint major if you have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and are in good academic standing. This information was taken from the COE Handbook (I have a son in the Undeclared Engineering program). Hope this helps.

Upmagic, I think i misinterpreted your first post.
Anyways I think Momfirst3 answered my question quite well.
