I want to go to school somewhere in the Northeast. I plan to apply to either Cornell or Dartmouth ED next fall, but if I don't get in I'm looking for backup plans. I want to be somewhere close to good skiing/snowboarding...

So, what's the closest decent (1000+ foot vertical) resort to Rochester?

I think you are really basing your college decisions - or at least your backup decisions- on the wrong stuff. I strongly advise not applying to Rochester if you are looking for just skiing, it'll be a waste of your time as the admissions officers will see right through you. not a good backup. Plus, the skiing at Rochester isnt that great anyway apparently.

If I was basing my college decisions on just snowboarding, I'd apply early to CU-Boulder and be done. As a matter of fact, I want to major in [computer] engineering, and I know Rochester has a fairly good engineering program relative to the other non-Ivy schools in the area. Therefore, I came here to ask if Rochester had any good skiing in the area. That happens to be something I'd like to do in what free time I'll have as an engineering major.

All I was asking was whether or not Rochester had any decent ski areas within reasonable weekend driving distance, not for your wrongly conclusive analysis of my decision-making abilities. Thanks for answering my question, though.

ok , i wasnt judging anything in my post, you can reread it if you want, i was merely telling you to be careful if you were actually going to use this as a measure of a college.....and i did answer your question - rochester is cold, but no really great slopes close by. All of the slopes are like an hour or so drive away.

Sorry for my reactionary post, I wasn't in a really good mood yesterday.

Anyway, I checked it out and found that Bristol Mountain is the closest, about 45 minutes away. It looks like a decent mountain, but I may end up looking out west, as University of Washington has a very good compE program and some great mountains nearby...thanks for your help.
