I've basically got my school choices down, and now I'm looking for one school that has pretty average admissions stats (like 50% acceptance rate) to be my fallback safety. If I end up having to go to an academically weaker school, I would want to spend my time skiing. :) That's actually a huge deal to me.

Any suggestions of decent schools with ski slopes nearby that aren't really competitive. I've already looked into Bowdoin, Dartmouth, and Colorado College and they are a bit too competitive, with the exception of Colorado College which I'm considering except for the fact that it has been on the decline for awhile. :(

take another look at colorado college -- it is doing much better and they are investing lots of money and effort into increasing their ranking. they are spending tons of money on new buildings and have some really great professors. several of my sons friends graduated this past year and will be going on to stanford and harvard for grad school, so it can't be too bad.

University of Denver and University of Colorado at Boulder also fit the bill.

Well, they are not big but they are ski hills with chairlifts and all. The Hoofer's Club at UW has frequent trips to local and more distant slopes.

hsmom: I will give Colorado College a look. It really does have everything I want but it is just hard to dish out 40k a year for a school that seems to be dropping. But if you know ppl that are going to some great grad schools from there, I will definitely look into it some more.

311griff: well it certainly has the environment I'm looking for...again it's all about determining whether it's worth the money for the education and opportunities provided. thanks for the tip.

Dartmouth and Middlebury have slopes with their namesake that are within 20 min of the campus. Colgate has two trails right on the edge of the campus, but I'm not sure if they're still in operation.

colorado college is looking to diversify -- so if you are out of the normal geographic region that attends, you might get a boost.

what major are you looking at? you might contact colorado college in the department you are interested in and see what they have to offer. The professors I know are all PHDs or have a master's degree from Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, U of Chicago, etc.

hsmomstef: i think I just can't spell :) thanks that link works

HMC: I was checking out Bates and it looks pretty awesome, but has a low admission rate, so I guess it'd come down to Colorado College and Bates but neither would be the safety I'm looking for. I think Boulder will end up working.
