so what do girls at amherst where? Do people dress up to go out or is it all pretty casual. Are there any particular “must have” items? is there anything that people from other parts of the country might not think to bring?

East coast fashion is much preppier than the rest of the country. On the male side, I’ve been told to expect more polos, oxfords, and button-ups. The only sure advice I can give is to dress for a cold winter.

Sweatshirts, sweatpants, flip-flops. Leave the makeup at home.

I agree with Kwu.

Not sure about girls, but my boy wears jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, hoodies. I don’t think a polo shirt has ever touched his flesh. He doesn’t wear button down shirts except when he has to dress up (like once or twice a year?). When visiting I don’t see the kids looking any more “preppy” than on the west coast where I live… which is to say, not too much.

How bad of an idea would it be to show up wearing my Williams t-shirt?

I usually agree with kwu on Amherst-related things, but I’m going to go ahead and call him out for being pretty incorrect :)

I’d say the females of the campus are split 60/40 with 60% wearing normal clothes (non-pajamas/sweats) to class and the rest dressing down a bit. Jeans and a top is my daily go-to. Even those who don sweats and slippers to class will dress cute on the weekends (dresses, skirts, jeans and a nice top) and WILL most likely put on some makeup. We don’t do heels on the weekends; flats/sandals are most common. Casual but well-groomed is the overall theme, I’d say.

A few nicer dresses for the occasional semi-formal would be a good investment.

Of course, do whatever you are most comfortable with, and I promise no one will find you to be out of place. We’ve got a little bit of everything here and people could care less what you wear.
