I remember someone asking about club/intramural sports some time ago. Here's a list of the over 50 club sports teams/programs at UVa.

Club sports teams are different from the varsity teams that are funded by the UVa Athletics Department. For example, if you aren't good enough to play in UVA's official women's basketball team or the men's lacrosse team, you can play for the club team and compete with other schools' club teams. Also, there are a number of clubs for non-varsity sports like sailing and fencing.

Oh, I forgot to explain intramurals. Intramural sports are comprised of teams created by UVa students to compete w/ other UVa student teams. So, you and your friends can easily put a team together. Dorms and student organizations often have their own intramural teams that play against other dorms/organizations in a number of sports.
