club sports

are there many club level sports teams at w&l that are competitive? is there a competitive rugby team? if so, who do they play and how serious is it? ive played club rugby at my high school for a few years and hope to be able to play at w&l too.

Yeah, our rugby team is amazing (a couple of guys on the club ice hockey team with me are rugby players) - they play a full schedule against other schools and they're quite competitive. I'd recommend trying to send them a ne-mail, you might be able to find an e-mail address on the W&L athletics site.

Tell me about the club ice hockey team. Where do you skate, how serious is it, what is the season, and how often do you practice and play?

Unlike club soccer, lacrosse, ultimate or rugby, we on the ice hockey team just play for fun. Doesn't mean we don't like to win though! The reason that we can't be really serious is that we can't practice as there is no ice rink in Lexington. We play all our games in Roanoke - an hour's drive away and are always the road team. Many guys are on other sports teams and do a lot of other stuff so we simply don't have time to put in practice time as you would have to add the two hours of travel to however long you practice.

For this reason our attendance varies greatly from game to game. We play about once a week from early November until April - either Thur sday night or Sunday afternoon or evening (we have zero or two games some weeks though). Usually we can put together a solid two lines but we've the last few Sunday games we've had enough for three, almost four lines. On the flip side, we had a game last week (right in the middle of midterms) where we had only six skaters. Needless to say, we were completely exhausted at the end but it was one of the most enjoyable games of my life - after playing for 45 minutes of a game you don't complain about ice time for a while.

We play in the Roanoke Valley Adult Hockey League. You can learn more about them at their website rvaha.homestead.com

PS: We've had a really bad season this year - a lot of new people have joined and due to scheduling conflicts we haven't been able to get enough people to join. It's not indicative of our usual performance.
