Very nice moldau :) Will vote for you.

.........wow.

yay for super specific self segregating asian clubs!

and yay for alliteration!

Wow...
Now I REALLY wonder why I chose UCLA over UCI.

b/c we're betteeeer :D

(and UCI has even more asians than us...they could have a buddhist burmese badminton club for all we know..)

Well, according to most people we are "socially inept".

Why is it that we have clubs/groups like Asian Pacific Islander, Latino Association or Black student league, and it's considered normal. But if caucasian people start a club or group like The White Student League, then that's consider racist. This stupid double standard bullcrap is oneof the worst thing I've seen in my life.

^

Who said it's considered racist? (FTR, my question is not meant to challenge your statement).

Well, I figure here's the rationale behind things like Asian Pacific Islander clubs, Latino associations, etc. The average college student is white. On most campuses, whites make up about 50% of the population, and all other students comprise smaller bodies. Hispanics, Pacific Islanders have commonalities of experience, culture, and when you are in the minority, sometimes it is nice to see a group of like-minded people together, sharing similar viewpoints and life experiences. Also, these groups can bring their minority culture to the majority by hosting events, etc. I.e. the groups act dually as a social meeting place and as a way to magnify their prescense to the school community.

So, there's three reasons why a "white" club would be kind of stupid and probably seen as racist because it has no practical purpose for existing (although I'm not saying an Asian club at UCLA isn't kind of stupid, too!):

1.) You want to meet white people, you meet them everyday and everywhere; they're most of your students, and most of the stars on T.V. You're not in a minority that needs centralizing or magnification in order to feel cohesive and like your viewpoints are represented
2.) White people don't have a cohesive set of experiences that other, smaller and less diversified "ethnic" groups have; you get a bunch of Asians together, and they can talk about learning English, probably share first languages in common, can talk about their FOB, crazy school strict parents and etc. etc.
3.) This goes along with #2: White people do have "clubs"; see the Italian Club, or maybe there's a Greek club, etc.; it's just that there's a lot more cultural subgroups under the "white" umbrella than under an "Asian" or "Latino" umbrella
4.) A "black" club or X group that targets color of skin as opposed to ethnicity has its roots in prejudice against that subgroup b/c of the color of their skin; and I do think there is still a lot of racism and having the targeted group band together and fight that racism is a noble cause; a white group would usually have no history and continuing struggle with racism

As far as offering an explanation for why a "white" club at a historically black college would be racist, the real answer is that if black and latino clubs are justified at majority white schools, then this viewpoint /is/ unfair. So I would say although in concept an Asian club isn't wrong and most of the time a white club is, there are instances where there's obvious hypocrisy.

nikkei,

Wait...so you think that there aren't stupid clubs at UCI?

Haha. and I promise, we're a hell of a lot more social than UCI. Trust me, as someone who used their library a whole lot in CC and barely ever saw a soul on campus, ever.

I think all the UCs are plagued with "stupid" clubs.

And remember kiddos: your dollars probably subsidize the Hmong Ping Pong Movie Watcher's Club!

.........

Yes clubs/organizations recruit each quarter and you should be able to contact them through http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu and ask about winter quarter applications.

Hello- digging up an old thread because I want to find a Buddhist community at UCLA. I know the Christian groups advertise like crazy, but is anyone here part of the Buddhist Association, or have seen them?

I went to the website and they seem to fit what I was looking for :)

Haven't heard of one around, but I'm sure they exist.

AND WOW, I totally thought it was DWM digging up this old thread. LOL I am so surprised that it was not her.
