One of the best things about going to UCLA is that there's so many different activities to do! I'm pretty involved on campus, so if you have questions about UCLA extracurriculars, what to join (please include an area of interest), how a specific club is like, etc. I shall TRY to answer them (i might not cover everything... there's way too many clubs available, and i dont know everything). current bruins, feel free to chime in.

Is there an Asian club? heheh. Actually I was wondering if there was any track & field team that is sort of like, for people who aren't good enough to be on the official track team. If not, I'll miss high jump. =/

Well anyway, are there any interesting clubs for like, generally socializing or whatnot?

"Is there an Asian club?"

Please be joking. Please.

There are many asian fraternities...

... and they haze like crazy

with a 40+% asian population in UCLA i HIGHLY DOUBT that there is an asian club.

"Is there an Asian club?"

Yes, there are plenty. They have their specific ethnic differences, but you dont have to be that certain ethnicity to join. Some of the popular ones include:

Association of Chinese Americans (ACA)
Nikkei Student Union (NSU)
Korean-American Student Association (KSA)
Samahang Filipino
Vietnamese Student Union (VSU)
Chinese Students Association (CSA)
Hapa Club (mixed asian and other)
Hong Kong Student Society (HKSS)
Association of Hmong Students
Indian Student Union (ISU)
Japanese Student Union (JSA)
Pacific Islander Student Association (PISA)
Taiwanese American Union (TAU)
Thai Smakom
United Cambodian Students
Pakistani Students Association

There's some service based Asian clubs, including:

Asian American Tutorial Project (chinatown tutoring)
Casa Heiwa and Angelina Mentorship Program (little tokyo tutoring)
Asian Pacific Health Corps (good for pre-meds)

Religious clubs:

Asian American Christian Fellowship
Chinese Christian fellowship
Korean Campus Crusades for Christ
Korea Inter-varsity christian fellowship
Korean-American Campus Mission
University Buddhist Association

Social Activism:

Asian Pacific Coalition (the master of ALL these Asian Clubs)
Concerned Asian Pacific-Islander Students for Action (CAPSA)

Physical activities...

ACA has martial arts, lion dance, hip hop
NSU has hip hop and kyodo taiko drumming
Hanoolim has Korean drumming
... i'm sure there's a ton of other hip hop or dance teams out there. im sure theres opportunities to do tai chi, taekwondo, wushu, kendo, and other stuff

Fraternities (Asian Greek Council or AGC)
Lambda Phi Epsilon
Omega Sigma Tau

Sororities (AGC)
Theta Kappa Phi
Chi Alpha Delta

"with a 40+% asian population in UCLA i HIGHLY DOUBT that there is an asian club."

yeah i think you're right westow ;)

"Well anyway, are there any interesting clubs for like, generally socializing or whatnot?"

if you are just looking for socializing, then i highly recommend the cultural clubs (the very first list). they host a mixture of activities throughout the year, including parties, culture show, culture events, service events, socials, maybe a ski trip, etc. your participation in the clubs is up to you... the more events you want to go to, the more active you are!

i also want to echo that there's serious hazing among the asian frats.

"i also want to echo that there's serious hazing among the asian frats."

What does that mean?

They are not governed by IFC (Interfraternity Council) so they get away with making their pledges do a lot of stuff that know one wants to do. I don't know exactly, but I've heard its bad

how is the dance team? is it hard to make the team? are there any other dance team, groups, classes, etc at ucla?

"how is the dance team? is it hard to make the team?"

the dance team is AMAZING. they're really good, they compete nationally, they get a lot of TV exposure during bruin athletic events. you have to audition to make the team. if you are a senior applying to ucla next year, your audition can help you get into ucla. also, all the girls on there are really pretty.

"are there any other dance team, groups, classes, etc at ucla?"

yes, there are dance classes taught at the wooden center. i believe there is also ballroom dancing and salsa taught in ackerman grand ballroom. when you get here, i suggest checking those out at the wooden center and ask for a schedule of dance classes. some of the culture groups i listed also have cultural dance groups or hip hop dance teams.

this isnt "extracurricular activities" but i was just wondering...i was at the campus today on tours (and yes im going to ucla in the fall) and the tour guide kept saying how tom hanks always comes and stuff to watch drama productions and stuff...and a whole bunch of other stars...and obviously the schools location in LA makes it very close to all of that...im really interested in a career in the entertainment/movie/media industry..do u know what kinds of opportunities i have to pursue this ?

yermama,
my roommate is a theatre major... he has seen tom hanks at one of his events. i am not very familiar with this field, but i would recommend mingling with film/theatre majors. but to really get into the industry, youll need to know insiders. two days ago, UCLA just had an "entertainment night" where UCLA alumni in the entertainment industry--acting, agents, business affairs, casting, directing, producing, writing, singing, drama writer, film, music, finance, graphic deisng, improve/comedy, journalism, law, make-up, marketing for film/tv/sales/product placement, news, tv production, public relations, publicity, radio, screenwriting, sound editting, sports entertainment, talent management and representation, visual effects, directing-- came to talk to current UCLA students about the entertainment/movie/media industry. thats probably one of the biggest pluses of going to UCLA... there's many ALUMNI who are in the field. i'm sure theres other opportunities that i dont know of. perhaps see if you can get onto the email list for film or theatre department cuz they probably get information about upcoming events.

How about tennis at UCLA? There's only 14 courts I believe. I can't find tennis on the intramural website...so does it exist?

My friend once saw Pete Sampras practicing on the courts. She also once played table tennis with John McEnroe (who apparently was very stingy on the line calls), but that's another story. I went there and saw the women's team, and they were hitting the ball with some serious pace. Ferocious. Of course, they were hitting right back to each other without any visible intelligence in their shots, but maybe they were just warming up.

kfc4u,

What can you tell me about forensics at UCLA?

"How about tennis at UCLA?"

i am not so familiar with tennis, but i think there are three levels of intramural tennis competition... one for beginners, one for intermediate, and one for advanced. i've heard the advanced team is actually very very good and that they do well in national tournaments. i think you can sign up for this through the wooden center, and i would suggest you talking to them when you get there. there are tennis courts in the sunset rec area (10 lighted ones) and also tennis courts near the LA Tennis Center.

ucla finished in 4th place at the 2004 national intramural tennis championship: http://www.itatennis.com/2004CampusChamps.htm

if you enjoy watching tennis, the UCLA tennis teams are very good. men's tennis is ranked #7 in the nation, and women's tennis is ranked #10 in the nation. entrance into tennis matches are free and are located in the LA Tennis Center, which is close to the dorms.

"What can you tell me about forensics at UCLA?"

what kind of forensics are you looking for? i have not heard anything about speech and debate at UCLA, but a friend told me they do exist. UCLA does have one of the best model united nations (MUN) programs in the west coast, and they travel nationwide (maybe even internationally next year) to compete at conferences. but the star is MOCK TRIAL. they are the TWO-TIME DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

ucla 2005 champions: http://www.collegemocktrial.org/winners.htm

ucla mock trial website: http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/prelaw/mt/mt.html

ucla fields a total of 4 squads of mock trial teams. they are all very competitive to get in. the "varsity" team is the one that won the national championships.

hmm... the bruin democrats and bruin republicans also host a quarterly debate i think.

what other forensics are you interested in?

kfc4u-

does the fact that i got the alumni scholarship help me get some alum contacts who are in the industry? they said u will form a lot of relationships with ucla alumni who can help u get jobs, but do u know how much this really helps?
