clubs

if i started a club in my senior year, would it look like i'm padding my resume? because i'm thinking about starting a ping pong club in my school but i never really thought of making one. i really like ping pong and i'm pretty good but its not my main sport. i've been playing ping pong casually for a few years now.

If you like it, and genuinely want to do it, then it won’t be padding your resume.

Which is to say, why does it matter what it looks like to schools if it’s something you really want to do?

thanks. but wont it lower my chances in any way if it looks like im padding it though?

i think it’ll only hurt you if it’s pretty obvious you’re just out to resume pad, i.e. you have no major ECs and are starting a club just to make it seem like you have one.

if it’s a continuation of your interests or an interest that teachers/counselors can attest to, or if you’re just interested in it then by all means go for it. even if you have no other ECs, I can’t see it doing too much damage.

no, i don’t think it should. it could possibly be a positive though if it’s a continuation of your interests (i.e. you’re a ping pong player, teach ping pong, ect). i started a club based on something i really liked my senior year because i didn’t have time during my three years. in my interview and after i got in, people (my admissions officer and other admissions officers) remembered me based on this club. in fact, my admissions officer mentioned the club to other students at admitted students events so when i got to yale, people knew about my club. it was kind of weird. but the moral of the story is, do what you want. don’t worry about what others will think about it.

what kind of club was it?

If you think it’ll look like padding, but you really want to do it, another option is just to do it but not put it on your app. I joined Quiz Bowl my senior year because it looked really fun, but I didn’t even bother including it on my app because I figured it would just be a distraction.
