i'm thinking about applying ED to CMC, but after extensive research, i'm worried that CMC doesn't have as strong reputations as USC/NYU.
would it be worth it to turn down USC/NYU, for CMC?

CMC has as great, if not greater, reputation than USC/NYU. CMC has some of the best govt/econ/IR programs in the country and also a VERY VERY good joint science department (I’m a biochem major/pre-med and they have 90%+ matriculation rate into first or second choice med schools every year and excellent professors) I turned down some “top/Ivy” schools for CMC because of how impressed I was with it when I visited/toured. I have loved every minute here and you should definitely come down and do an overnight!! But be warned…at CMC you are gonna be working very hard…but having an amazing time too!! =) Let me know if you have any other questions!

Well, CMC is more selective than either USC or NYU. It also has significantly more money per student than either of those schools. The average person on the street is more likely to know USC and NYU, but I think that CMC has a better reputation among people who are actually familiar with all three schools. They’re very different-- large urban universities versus a small suburban liberal arts college. But if you prefer CMC, I don’t think “reputation” should keep you from applying ED. I doubt that USC and NYU would open doors for you that CMC wouldn’t.

@tenor- That is not true. CMC has nowhere near the national reputation of either NYU or USC. It may be more selective and possibly have higher stats but when you are looking for a job, that will not be relevant. Out of the choices you presented (assuming you plan to go into business) go NYU > CMC > USC. NYU is hands down a better school for business and you could transfer into Stern undergrad easily if you play your cards right. CMC could be a good choice if you plan on graduate school after as it has a good reputation in academia but don’t count on the CMC name getting you interviews unless you happen to be lucky and get an alum on the other end of your message.

As a small LAC, CMC can not have the national name recognition in the general population that large universities NYU and USC have, but to say that NYU and USC have better repuations than CMC is patently untrue. CMC has an outstanding reputation, particularly on the West Coast and with the major i-banks, management consulting, accounting, consumer goods, and tech firms. And while CMC alums love to hire CMC students, over 100 pretigious companies interview on campus each year, so you obviously don’t need to get “lucky” with an alum to get an interview.

This is totally false. NYU and USC are good schools, but I can tell you as someone who worked at (and had offers from many others) one of the top strategy consulting firms, we didn’t even interview on campus at USC. The only schools where we (and most of our competing firms) interviewed on campus in CA were the Claremont Colleges, UCLA and Stanford. This was also true of many of the big iBanks. Depending on your major and interest area, NYU or USC might make more sense, but honestly as far as the more prestigious consulting/finance employers go, CMC far outranks those other two…

I worked in consulting for 3 years and then went to a Top 5 (often ranked #1 or 2) business school. In my B-School class, there were 9 students from CMC. Pretty incredible from such a small school…

This was my experience as well…plus you have the added bonus of amazing reputations for law school, med school and grad school admissions if you decide to go that route. CMC is an amazing place and if the small college environment is something you’re interested in, I wouldn’t worry about general population name recognition…

I am pretty sure that kim234 and kio888 are the same person. I just point this out, so that people will not assume there is some sort of consensus.

CMC’s reputation is like that of any small liberal arts college compared to any major research university. For those “in the know” of top LACs, which usually are highly educated people or top companies, CMC’s academic reputation is on par if not better than USC/NYU. For the larger population, those who only follow and are aware of schools because of their sports teams or because they just happen to live in the area, those research universities will be better well known. better well known does not mean better education or better school. usc/nyu beat cmc in a popularity contest, but that doesn’t matter when the larger population(next door neighbor, high school teacher, post office carrier, ups driver, etc) aren’t hiring you.

Lastly if you’re applying ED to any school, you shouldn’t have any doubts about it. ED should be reserved for those who know for a fact that the school is their number 1 choice. Your choices in schools appear to be solely for “major” purposes as NYU is not like USC or CMC, nor is USC like CMC or NYU, nor CMC like NYU or USC. You’re probably looking into majoring in business/econ/finance, I’d just ask you to really think about your choices based off on the possibility that you may change your major and end up hating business/econ/finance.
